We look forward to working with other interested States beyond our region that are committed to enhancing global fishery resources by means of responsible fishing practices on the high seas of the South-East Atlantic.
Australia and Indonesia co-hosted the Regional Ministerial Meeting on Promoting Responsible Fishing Practices, including Combating Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing in the Region, in Bali, Indonesia, from 2 to 4 May 2007.
In addition, it agreed upon a comprehensive plan of action, aimed at enhancing the overall level of fisheries management so as to ensure the sustainable use of fisheries resources in the region andoptimize the benefit of adopting responsible fishing practices.
For this reason, fishery resources must be managed sustainably, and responsible fishing practices need to be promoted.
In this regard, the promotion of responsible fishing practices, and prevention, deterrence and elimination of illegal fishing are essential to ensure food security and poverty alleviation in the region and countries in the region should.
Australia advised that a regional plan of action was being developed in the South-East Asian region to promote responsible fishing practices, including combating illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing. .
The objective of this RPOA is to enhance and strengthen the overall level of fisheries management in the region, in order to sustain fisheries resources and the marine environment, andto optimise the benefit of adopting responsible fishing practices.
The Ministers agreed on a common and collaborative approach to promote responsible fishing practices and to combat illegal, unreported and unregulated(IUU) fishing in the region, in particular in the South China Sea, the Sulu-Sulawesi Seas and the Arafura-Timor Seas;
With respect to the issue of fishing, my delegation wishes to reiterate the Government of Mexico's commitment to developing responsible fishing practices based on the sustainable use of fishing resources.

Other measures proposed by Mr. Bray included enhanced fisheries MCS; comprehensive fishery data exchange arrangements; and consideration of special requirements of developing countries within the provisions of the FAO Code of Conduct, including their capacity to conduct andmanage fishery operations effectively and enforce responsible fishing practices.
As a developing island State whose economy is dependent on these resources,Micronesia is committed to the promotion of responsible fishing practices- not only within our exclusive economic zone and the zones of our neighbours in the region, but also in the contiguous high seas areas adjacent to the zones.
