The Committee considered the agenda item entitled"Space and society", in accordance with paragraph 48 of General Assembly resolution 63/90.
In accordance with General Assembly resolution 56/51,the Committee began consideration of an item entitled"Space and society.
The Committee had continued its deliberations on the item entitled"Space and society", in direct response to the recommendations of the Vienna Declaration.
The consideration of the future role and activities of the Committee would therefore benefit from the work carried out under current items on the agenda of the Committee,such as the item on space and society.
Space and education had formed the focus of the debate on space and society, at which a number of reports from regional centres of space science and technology had been heard.
The Working Group of the Whole recommended that the issue of promoting the greater participation of young people in space science and technology be considered under the item"Space and society" of the agenda of the Committee.
His delegation was also pleased to note that the Committee had considered a new item entitled"Space and society", as well as international cooperation in the activities of the International Satellite System for Search and Rescue(COSPAS-SARSAT), which was marking its twentieth anniversary in 2002.
The topics covered the whole range of space activities, including space law, space sciences, space engineering, space life sciences, space informatics,space applications and space and society.
Also requests the Committee to continue to consider,at its forty-ninth session, under its agenda item entitled"Space and society" the special theme for the focus of discussions for the period 2004-2006"Spaceand education", in accordance with the workplan adopted by the Committee;
In line with the recommendations set out in the Vienna Declaration, his delegation had joined Austria,Canada, Chile, Nigeria and Turkey in proposing a new item for inclusion in the Committee's agenda entitled"Space and society.
Also requests the Committee, in view of the importance of space and education, to continue to consider, at its fifty-second session,under its agenda item entitled“Space and society”, the special theme for the focus of discussions“Spaceand education”, in accordance with the workplan adopted by the Committee;26.
Bearing in mind the steadily increasing role of civil society in the peaceful uses of outer space, the MERCOSUR countries noted with satisfaction that, in resolution 56/51,the General Assembly had provided for the inclusion in the agenda of the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space of an item entitled"Space and society.
Also requests the Committee to continue to consider,at its forty-eighth session, its agenda item entitled"Space and society" under the special theme for the focus of discussions for the period 2004-2006 entitled"Spaceand education", in accordance with the work plan adopted by the Committee;
That delegation expressed the view that any priority areas of space education identified by the Committee could then be considered as special themes under the agenda item entitled"Space and society" or in symposiums held on the margins of future sessions of the Committee.
Under the item on space and society, it had focused on space tools for education, while under the item on space and water, it had noted that space applications could contribute to cost-effective water resource management and predict and mitigate water-related emergencies.
Also requests the Committee, in view of the importance of space and education, to continue to consider,at its fifty-first session, under its agenda item entitled"Space and society", the special theme for the focus of discussions"Spaceand education", in accordance with the workplan adopted by the Committee;
The Committee agreed that, as recommended by the Working Group of the Whole at the forty-seventh session of the Scientific and Technical Subcommittee(A/AC.105/958, para. 55 and annex I, para. 9) the issue of promoting the greater participation of young peoplein space science and technology would be considered by the Committee under the item"Space and society.
In accordance with paragraph 51 of General Assembly resolution 62/217, the Committee continued to consider,under the agenda item entitled"Space and society", the special theme for the focus of discussions entitled"Spaceand education", in accordance with the workplan adopted by the Committee at its forty-sixth session, in 2003.
The Committee's work had covered the following main areas: ways and means of maintaining outer space for peaceful purposes; implementation of the recommendations of UNISPACE III; the work of the Scientific and Technical Subcommittee at its thirty-ninth session; the work of the Legal Subcommittee at its forty-first session;spin-off benefits of space technology; and space and society.
In accordance with paragraph 44 of General Assembly resolution 6/111, the Committee continued to consider,under the agenda item entitled"Space and society", the special theme for the focus of discussions for the period 2004-2006, entitled"Space and education", in accordance with the workplan adopted by the Committee at its forty-sixth session, in 2003.
Significant progress had also been made on the question of registering space objects and on such issues as the spin-off benefits of space exploration,strengthening the role of the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space in efforts to promote international cooperation in the use of outer space for peaceful purposes, and space and society, with special emphasis on education.
In accordance with paragraph 49 of General Assembly resolution 60/99, the Committee continued to consider,under the agenda item entitled"Space and society", the special theme for the focus of discussions for the period 2004-2006,"Spaceand education", in accordance with the workplan adopted by the Committee at its forty-sixth session, in 2003.
Drawing attention to the Committee's report(A/60/20(Supplement No. 20) and Corr.1), he said that during the past year the Committee had considered, inter alia, the following items: implementation of the recommendations of UNISPACE III, ways and means of maintaining outer space for peaceful purposes, the work of the Scientific and Technical Subcommittee and the Legal Subcommittee at their 2005 sessions,spin-off benefits of space technology, space and society and space and water.
