Ilmi Umerov is a dissident and member of the Crimean-Tatar national movement.
On 25 October 2017, Akhtem Chyihoz and Ilmi Umerov. illegally convicted in occupied Crimea, were released to Turkey by Russia.

After appearing in a TV interview in which heinsisted that Russia should leave Crimea, Ilmi Umerov was taken for questioning by officials from the Russian Federal Security Service.
The lawyer added that Ilmi Umerov had filed one more petition, as renowned HR lawyer Alexander Podrabinek had claimed his willingness to represent him in court.
The defense also petitioned for the exclusion of evidence- the record of interrogation of lawyer Mykola Polozov, whom they involved as a witness,thus preventing him from representing defendant Ilmi Umerov as his lawyer in court.
Ilmi Umerov was convicted in relation to a TV interview he gave in March 2016, in which he insisted that Russia should be“forced to leave Crimea, Donetsk and Luhansk”.
When Russian soldiers with noidentification signs captured Crimea in 2014, Ilmi Umerov in a protest resigned from his position as a head of Bakhchisaray district(Crimea, Ukraine), which he was holding for 9 years.
Ilmi Umerov became a subject to a politically motivated prosecution by the Russian state, was forcibly taken from the cardiac unit where he was under observation to Psychiatric Hospital No. 1 in Simferopol.
On August 26th we ask everyone who cares to come to MaidanNezalezhnosti to support the deputy chairman of the Mejlis- Ilmi Umerov, criminally persecuted in Crimea, and all Crimean prisoners who are subjected to be tortured by the Russian Federation.
His name is Ilmi Umerov, he is mentally healthy and he turned up to be in the arms of psychiatrists because of his belief that Crimea, which was annexed by Russia in 2014, is the part of Ukraine.
Last year's European Parliament Resolution on the cases ofCrimean Tatar leaders Akhtem Chiygoz, Ilmi Umerov and the journalist Mykola Semena demanded that Russia dismiss all charges against Semena, stop the legal proceedings and not impede his movement.

The joy that the Crimean Tatars are expressing due to release of thedeputies of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people Ilmi Umerov and Akhtem Chiygoz, remains a bitter, realizing that dozens of Crimean Tatars are illegally deprived of their liberty in Crimea, and their families and relatives are enduring sufferings and hardships.

We express our solidarity with illegally detained Ilmi Umerov, strongly condemning the political and motivated persecution of him and all other political prisoners of the Kremlin, and demand:.
On 27 September,a de facto court in Simferopol found Ilmi Umerov, a prominent critic of Russian occupation and Deputy Leader of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People(arbitrarily banned by the Russian authorities), guilty of making“public calls to violate the territorial integrity of the Russian Federation”(Article 280.1 of the Russian Criminal Code).
We expect that charges against another deputy chairman of the Mejlis, Mr. Ilmi Umerov, will be immediately lifted, and we reaffirm our long-standing position immediately to release all illegally detained Ukrainian citizens in Crimea and in the Russian Federation», the speaker said.
Amnesty International warmly welcomes the news of Ilmi Umerov and Akhtem Chyigoz's release and recognises it as a positive step but is concerned about the conditions of their release, which remain unclear.
During the round table cases of political prisoners Ilmi Umerov, Akhtem Chiyhoz as well as Evgeny Panov and other figurants of the of“Ukrainian saboteurs' case» were highlighted as an illustration to the injustice taking place to dozens of other political prisoners.
