Black and griffon vultures that breed in the area have home ranges that cover both countries. Black vultures that breed in Greece forage in Bulgaria, and griffon vultures that breed in Bulgaria forage in Greece.
The seminar was organized within the project“Conservation of black and griffon vultures in the Rhodope Mountains”, funded by the LIFE Programme of the European Union.
Namely the tracking of wounded or dead vultures(griffon vultures or black vultures) is part of the LIFE project entitled“Conservation of Black and Griffon cultures in the cross-border Rhodopes mountains”(LIFE RE-VULTURES).
These activities are the essence of our work on the black and griffon vultures, being the main tool for prevention of the species extinction from Greece and Bulgaria.
The research actions within the project aim to broaden our knowledge about the biology and ecology of the black and griffon vulture and help us to better understand the major threats for the species.
During the action, the team"Protection of Black and Griffon Vultures in the Rhodopes" project marked 25 Griffon Vultures with colored ringsand wing tags, with unique numbers.
The kick-off meeting marked the start of an exciting five-year long cooperation between these organisations for two projects funded by the European Commission: LIFE Vultures-‘'Conservation of Black and Griffon vultures in the cross-border Rhodope Mountains''- and LIFE Bison-‘'Urgent actions for the recovery of European Bison populations in Romania''.
The seminar was organized within the framework of the project"Conservation of black and griffon vultures in the cross-border Rhodope mountains"(LIFE14 NAT/NL/000901) and"Preserve key forest habitats of the Lesser Spotted Eagle(Aquila pomarina) in Bulgaria(LIFE12 NAT/BG/001218) funded under the LIFE Program of the European Union.
The enormous damage that can cause the use of poisons to nature and humans is the reason why LIFE project“Protection of Black and Griffon Vultures in the Rhodope Mountains” specifically include activities to combat illegaluse of poisonous baits.
The training was part of the LIFE Project“Conservation of black and griffon vultures in Rhodope Mountains”(LIFE Vultures),and connected more than 30 participants that gained valuable knowledge, exchanged experiences and ideas.
Till now at least 16 different birds were observed at Studen kladenets feeding site(currently maintained in the frame of the LIFE project„Conservation of black and griffon vultures in the cross-border Rhodope mountains“)and at the vulture restaurants at Kresna and Kotel maintained by FWFF, Green Balkans and BPPS in the frame of the project Vultures Back to LIFE(LIFE14 NAT/BG/000649).
The young bird was fitted with transmitter this summer within the project“Conservation of Black and Griffon Vultures in the Rhodope Moutians” implemented by the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds(BSPB)and Rewilding Rhodopes Foundation from the Bulgarian side.
The installation of the camera takes place within the framework of a five-year LIFE+ project“Protection of the Black and Griffon Vultures in the Rhodopes” developed by Rewilding Europe in partnership with the Rewilding Rhodopes Foundation, the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds, WWF Greece, the Greek Ornithological Society.
