This is what string theory says about the extra dimensions.
The extra dimensions were spaces in the Universe which we could not perceive.
And string theory suggests that those 20 numbers have to do with the extra dimensions.
All of these other universes would exist within the extra dimensions of M-theory, dimensions that are all around us.
Gravitons, according to string theory, are closed loops,so they can float off into the extra dimensions.
But, as you can see, the extra dimensions fold in on themselves and intertwine in a very interesting shape, interesting structure.
The extra dimensions of string theory can help us to explain why the numbers in our Universe is so calibrated that allow everything to exist.
For example, we could somehow be forced to live in a four dimensional world without any access to the extra dimensions.
So when we talk about the extra dimensions in string theory, it's not one extra dimension, as in the older ideas of Kaluza and Klein.
According to that theory, gravity is really strong andjust appears to be weak because gravity can"leak" into the extra dimensions.

Each is as real as every other, in the sense that there are many universes,each with a different shape, for the extra dimensions.
If we knew exactly what the extra dimensions look like-- we don't yet, but if we did-- we should be able to calculate the allowed notes, the allowed vibrational patterns.
But we believe the answer for why those numbers have the values they do may rely on the form of the extra dimensions.
And the idea is that if this is what the extra dimensions look like, then the microscopic landscape of our universe all around us would look like this on the tiniest of scales.
So particle masses, the strengths of forces, and most importantly,the amount of dark energy would be determined by the shape of the extra dimensions.
So, imagine we have a certain kind of particle called a graviton-- that's the kind of debris we expectto be ejected out, if the extra dimensions are real.
Well some researchers lost heart,concluding that was so many candidate shapes for the extra dimensions, each giving rise to different physical features, string theory would never make definitive, testable predictions.
And if you watch these little fellows vibrating around-- they will be there in a second-- right there,notice that they way they vibrate is affected by the geometry of the extra dimensions.
Because you see, if there are other universes, and if those universes each have,say, a different shape for the extra dimensions, then the physical features of each universe will be different, and in particular, the amount of dark energy in each universe will be different.
But even though the dimensions are hidden,they would have an impact on things that we can observe because the shape of the extra dimensions constrains how the strings can vibrate.
So an analogy for the extra dimension would be looking at the anchor line of a boat.
This membrane is a boundary of the extra dimension.
So here we have it spinning around in the extra dimension.
But lately, there have been a few incidents where the extra dimension is downright creepy.
We simply can't reach out into the extra dimension-- even 10 to the minus-30 centimeters-- to touch the other brane world.
