Since the value of the means of production is twelve shillings, 14 2/5 of these articles merely replace the constant capital advanced.

Just as a change in the value of the means of production, even after they have commenced to take a part in the labour-process, does not alter their character as constant capital, so, too, a change in the proportion of constant to variable capital does not affect the respective functions of these two kinds of capital.
On the side of value, it is determined by the proportion in which it is divided into constant capital of value of the means of production, and variable capital or value of labor-power, the sum total of wages.
During the process of spinning, the spinners transmitted to the yarn the value of the means of production consumed by their labour, amounting to £372, and at the same time they created, in proportion with the labour-power expended by them, new value to the amount of, say, £128.
