This time we counted 15,072 large white-fronted geese and 207 gray geese. .

During the bird census carried out by a team of the Wildlife Conservation Society on January 2, 2016, we established 6980 Red-breasted Geese(of which 5830 in Durankulak and 1150 in Shabla lake)and 2025 White-fronted geese( 1205 in the Shabla lakes and 820 in Durankulak).
On January 6, northwest of Durankulak among an innumerable flock of Greater White-fronted Geese and Red-breasted Geese the rare for the Bulgarian avifauna Pink-footed Goose(Anser brachyrhynchus) was observed.
By the mid andlate 90's over 250 000 White-fronted geese(Anser albifrons) and up to 80,000 Red-breasted geese(Branta ruficollis) were regularly recorded in the region of Shabla and Durankulak, which are the main wintering grounds for these species in Bulgaria.
During the monitoring 350-400 Red-breasted geese and over 400 White-fronted geese were observed, feeding next to the road at one of the very few spots where the wind had blown the snow away thus uncovering the crops.
The main food of the White-Fronted Goose is tender parts of the green plants.
