Predrag Banovic, a Bosnian Serb accused of abusing, beating, torturing and killing prisoners at the Keraterm camp in 1992 pleaded guilty to one count of crimes against humanity on Thursday(26 June) as part of a plea agreement with UN war crimes prosecutors.
The lack of any prior criminal conviction and the defendant's age-- Banovic was 23 when he served at the camp-- were taken into account as relevant mitigating factors, as were his guilty plea and co-operation with the UN tribunal.
According to the indictment, Nenad and Predrag Banovic-- who prior to the 1992-1995 war in BiH worked as waiters-- regularly performed duties as guards at the Keraterm camp, where hundreds of Muslim and Croat detainees succumbed to the atrocities committed by prison guards and commanders.
