Specific objective 2.2: Foster the restoration and management of ecological corridors.
Developing innovative solutions andguidance to identify ecological corridors in a harmonised way across the Carpathian eco-region;
The ecological corridors will be identified in more detail by using the new Carpathian-wide methodology in 4 transnationally relevant pilot sites: 1.
The methodology established under this project will be used for identification of ecological corridors in four transnationally relevant areas, namely: 1.
Valuation of natural resources ofVelika Morava river valley, specifically regarding biodiversity conservation of wetlands and the establishment of ecological corridors, etc.
Develop innovative solutions andguidance to identify ecological corridors and connectivity gaps in a harmonized way across the Carpathian eco-region.
Engage protected area and Natura 2000 site managers, conservationists, spatial planners andother key stakeholders in an integrated approach for strengthening the capacity to identify and manage ecological corridors.
More importantly, legally binding mechanism that takes into consideration the requirements of functioning ecological corridors is poorly implemented- mainly due to the lack of reliable data.
Maintaining or restoring ecological corridors will secure viable populations of large carnivores in the Carpathians and preserve one of the largest biodiversity hotspots and functioning ecosystems of the continent.

According to Mr. Egerer, the Carpathian Convention will officially endorse some outputs of the project- such the Carpathian-wide Strategy on ecological corridors, in order to make project results more sustainable and long lasting.
In general, ecological corridors of international, national or local importance are ecological trajectories and connections that allow the movement of individuals and the gene flow between protected areas and ecologically important areas.
Reconcile nature conservation with spatial planning and development in ecological corridors and Natura 2000 sites by identifying and implementing strategic directions and instruments and practices.
Engage protected area and Natura 2000 site managers, conservationists, spatial planners andother key stakeholders in an integrated approach for strengthening the capacity to identify and manage ecological corridors.
This region is characterized by protected natural areas and ecological corridors of the national ecological network for connecting protected areas and environmentally important areas.

When issuing official documents on the conditions to be fulfilled in the process of drafting the planning documents and conducting works and activities that may have an impact on nature, the Institute, among other things, prescribes measures for the conservation of ecologically important areas and ecological corridors.
There are 524 habitats of protected and strictly protected species registered in Vojvodina;20 ecologically significant areas and 12 ecological corridors of international importance that are part of the ecological network of the Republic of Serbia.
Ecological corridors can be natural and semi-natural watercourses and canals with semi-natural vegetation, as well as other landscape elements(boundaries, hedges, field protection belts, pastures, meadows and other artificial corridors) that create a link between ecologically important areas.
The first national workshop under the project ConnectGREEN,dedicated to the review of Draft Carpathian methodology for identifying key areas and ecological corridors used by large mammals(carnivores), was held in Belgrade, Serbia, on 1st February 2019.
Appendix 1 of the Decree lists the ecologically significant areas in Serbia, and Appendix 2 provides ecological corridors of international importance in the Republic of Serbia. Ecological network in Serbia currently consists of 101 ecologically important areas, designated as such according to the proposal of the Institute for Nature Conservation of Serbia.
Through the ConnectGREEN project, partners from different countries and various fields of activity(i.e. spatial data planning, research, government, conservation) have joined forces to increase capacity in ecological corridors identification and to overcome the conflict between infrastructure development and wildlife conservation.
An ecological network is a range of functionally and spatially connected or spatially close areas,i.e. ecologically important areas and ecological corridors, established with the aim of conserving, restoring and improving habitat types of particular importance for the protection and conservation of habitats of certain wild species of flora and fauna.
They have been identified in the database of the Institute for Nature Conservation of Serbia and the Institute for Nature Conservation of Vojvodina Province. The institutes also conduct monitoring of the state andassessment of the conservation of ecological corridors in cooperation with other professional and scientific institutions and managers of protected areas.
