I went to the National CARE Conference this month where the focus was on maternal mortality and child marriage.
Why is the Maternal Mortality Rate Increasing in the United States?
I am here to talk about the maternal mortality campaign.
There is maternal mortality, there is the toll of breastfeeding and there is the toll of raising a child until it is independent.
That's because America is the only developed country in the world where maternal mortality has actually increased in recent decades.
Our rate of maternal mortality actually increased over the last decade, while other countries reduced their rates.
And as we did, we described to them what their daughters-in-law actually did: they impacted maternal mortality rates and infant mortality rates.
The shocking part of this story is that our maternal mortality rate is actually higher than all other high-income countries, and our rates are far worse for women of color.
Cardiovascular disease, hemorrhage, high blood pressure causing seizures and strokes,blood clots and infection are some of the major causes of maternal mortality in this country.
Despite overall declines in maternal mortality in the majority of developing countries, women in rural areas are still up to three times more likely to die while giving birth than women living in urban centres.
The aging population of Europe continues to pressure government medical services,while infant mortality under five has been cut in half since 1990 and maternal mortality has dropped by one-fourth.
So when he initiated a five-year, $3 million pilot project to reduce infant and maternal mortality in Nigeria – a country with the second highest mortality rate in the world – he was doing more than just betting it would make a difference.
UN treaty bodies have repeatedly highlighted the importance of accurate and inclusive sex education and information as a means of ensuring the right to health because it contributes to a reduction of the rates of maternal mortality, abortion, adolescent pregnancies, and HIV.

Quality of care in the setting of childbirth is an underlying cause of racial and ethnic disparities in maternal mortality and severe maternal morbidity in the United States, and it's something we can address now.
