In line with the European climate change strategy, the Commission proposed global alignment of the legislation on emission of gaseous and particulate pollutants, with ambitious environmental targets.

If the engine fails to meet the requirements specified in this Directive and where the emissions of gaseous and particulate pollutants from the engine do not comply with the limit values as set out in the table in section 4.2.1 of Annex I.

There are already European regulations with limit values for gaseous and particulate pollutants and corresponding test requirements and type-approval procedures for private motor vehicles, heavy goods vehicles and off-road mobile machinery.
