Electronic referencing.
Electronic referencing means the utilization of computers in collecting, organizing and providing referencing materials to translators and revisers and all other clients.
Similarly, electronic referencing tools and computer-assisted translation had had the result of enhancing consistency and accuracy, but the intellectual core functions of the translator could not be automated.
Electronic referencing will enhance the efficiency of the process, allowing more thorough and comprehensive search and retrieval of relevant material, eliminating the need to make thousands of photocopies for inclusion in reference folders, and facilitating the provision of reference material to remote contractual translators.
Attention was drawn to the ongoing technology projects in computer-assisted translation, remote translation, speech recognition,terminology databases, electronic referencing and use of digital audio recording technology, and to the fact that, although investment and maintenance costs(procurement and maintenance of software licences, contracting of training and technical support services) were modest, technology projects entailed hidden costs to the Organization in terms of staff time spent on training, software customization and file processing or conversion.
It is also developing an electronic learning reference group to assist in determining the scope and topics of courses relevant to young people.
The electronic referencing tool developed at the United Nations Office at Vienna has undergone extensive enhancement.
As mentioned above in paragraph 11(c),a shift from hard-copy-based referencing of translation jobs to electronic referencing is a key component of the CAT project.
