In the short term, we, of course, need to conclude the asylum package.

FR Mr President, Mr Barrot, ladies and gentlemen,I too am pleased to be able to give my opinion on such a crucial debate as the asylum package, especially on the penultimate day of the parliamentary term.
In writing.- UK Conservatives have voted against the asylum package as, while we believe in cooperation in this area, we do not believe in a communitarised approach to asylum and immigration policy.
Let us ensure that we send a strong signal to the Commission- butmainly to the Member States- that we are serious in this Parliament about completing the asylum package in a way that will be acceptable to many right across the House.
Nevertheless, the other proposals in the asylum package will have to be adopted as quickly as possible so as to prevent a third phase of the European Common Asylum System from having to be developed.

On behalf of my group, I want to say that Sylvie Guillaume has prepared- in cooperation, as Mrs Hohlmeier said, with all the shadows- a proposal which is both sensitive and effective, andreally provides, as the Commissioner said, a cornerstone of the asylum package.
It would be important if the Parliament could,together with the Council, adopt the existing proposals, the asylum package, the simple permit proposal, the joint resettlement programme, the mutual recognition and the just adopted action plan for unaccompanied minors.
