As a Rapporteur for the opinion of the TRAN Committee for the draft Directive regarding clean and energy-efficient road vehicles, I consider it important to calculate the costs of a vehicle for its entire useful life, taking into consideration not only the initial purchase price, but also the price of the fuel used, carbon dioxide emissions, etc.
In addition, support to productive invest ments contributing to sustainable develop mentneed to be mentioned, such as the pro motion of clean and energy-efficient technologies and products, support for services that rely on a clean environment(e.g. R& D, health, education, tourism, etc.) and for local initiatives, that are often labour-intensive, and whose aim is to add value to the natural en vironment.
The third element is research: the Commission intends to strive to ensure that European research achieves the objective of having clean and highly energy-efficient transport.
