The common position also sets action values, measurable parameters which, if observed, will ensure that exposure limit values are not exceeded.
Figure 5.2 Noise exposure matches orexceeds upper exposure action values; workers must use hearing protectors.
Upper exposure action values: 85 dB(A)/137 dB(C) Hearing protection must be used if noise exposure is equal to or exceeds any of the upper exposure action values.
It simply means choosing another method, andit is worth emphasising that the action values must go on being maintained.
When the action values are exceeded, employers must come up with practical action- that is why they are called action values- by, for example, changing the way in which the work is organised or investing in better equipment.
The method involves introducing both action values and limit values that should never be exceeded.
Risk assessment is not an end in itself;its purpose is to identify actions required when exposure action values are reached or exceeded.

The common position sets limit values for exposure which must not be exceeded under any circumstances and exposure action values for daily exposure to noise and peak acoustic pressure.
When the lower exposure action values have been reached, the employer must ensure that the workers concerned or their representatives receive information and training; when these values have been exceeded, the employer must make individual hearing protectors available to the workers.
It is important that you ensure any data not obtained by measurement is representative of your work situation andyou take account of any uncertainty when determining whether exposure action values are exceeded.
