I salute Mr Schmidt.

I wish to begin by congratulating our rapporteur, Mr Schmidt, on raising the standard and with it our ambitions.
I should like to begin by saying that the Commission would firstly like to thank very much the rapporteur, Mr Schmidt.
I congratulate the rapporteur, Mr Schmidt, on his excellent work.
Most recently, Mr Schmidt was a member of the company management team of Georgsmarienhütte Holding GmbH, headquartered in Georgsmarienhütte.
I welcome many of the developments which Mr Schmidt' s report brings us.
I am certain that both Mr Schmidt and other Members have seen the reports from Eritrea and listened to interviews with its president.

Mr Schmidt is keen to strengthen the role and authority of the ECB, while I am with those who continue to question the independence of the ECB.
Member of the Commission.- Mr President,I would like to start by congratulating the rapporteur, Mr Schmidt, on this report.
Mr Schmidt, PSG President started the debate with a statement that a clear European approach is needed with regard to food security.
The preparatory work was carried out by the following members and delegates,together with Mr Schmidt, the expert working for the rapporteur.
I agree with the rapporteur, Mr Schmidt, that increased cooperation between central banks and national supervisory authorities will become inevitable.
During the ensuing discussion the following members took the floor: Ms King, Ms Westerlund,Ms Raunemaa, Mr Schmidt, Mr Rogalewski, and Ms Pavić-Rogošić.
Parliament is leading the way on this, and Mr Schmidt has played a particularly successful role in updating the directives in this way and very much led the way on the derivatives issue.
To pick up on the issue of small- and medium-sized enterprises: yes, they are important,but only if- as Mr Schmidt said- they are of high quality.
Mr Schmidt also raised the issue of a cumulative effect; however, I have answered this question in my point about the three-way balance, which is something we are going to be watching very closely.
To close,I too should like to take my turn in congratulating the rapporteur, Mr Schmidt, for his qualitative contribution to the debate on international fair trade law.
I do not consider this an acceptable compromise, therefore, and so I should like to call on my fellow Members to vote infavour of the amendment by my colleagues Mr Alvaro and Mr Schmidt.
In terms of institutional architecture, I would agree with the rapporteur, Mr Schmidt, that now is probably not a good time for publication of the full minutes.
Mr Schmidt says that we have such different systems- which is true- but he also says that we could live with these different systems, that they do not affect freedom of movement and that we do not need these regulations.
Mr Schmidt has put forward some good proposals, especially reducing VAT and the end of import duties, but the positive aspect of the report lies elsewhere; it shows the way forward and a principle of hope.
I am delighted that the rapporteur expressed his support for most of our amendments. In accordance with Mr Schmidt' s wishes, I also accept Amendment No 5 as a supplement to Paragraph 30.
If they adopt the amendments, tabled by Mr Schmidt and myself on behalf of our groups, then we are giving the go ahead for a rational directive, which will not cause prices to rise.
Needless to say, we support this,as well as the tabled amendments, although, like Mr Schmidt, we are loathe to replace Paragraph 30 which concerns the balance between the environment and other objectives.
