In the current Erasmus+ programme(2014-2020) promoting language learning and linguistic diversity is one of the overarching priorities.
CMC was awarded the European Label in 2006 in recognition of the project's success in promoting language learning and teaching.
The first Commission response was the Action Plan on“Promoting language learning and linguistic diversity 2004-2006”, which set out three strategic areas for intervention.

The Action Plan“Promoting Language Learning and Linguistic Diversity”2 was the Commission's answer to the Council and Parliament and took into account the feedback from a wide-ranging consultation held between 2002 and 2003.
On 25 September, the European Commission adopted a report on the implementation of the Action Plan“Promoting language learning and linguistic diversity.
It proposes to make use of existing programmes and initiatives for promoting language learning and the assessment of language skills and to further develop the curricula for interpreters and translators.
The Commission has already invited Member States to report in 2007 on the actions they have taken towards the objectives of the Action Plan'Promoting Language Learning and Linguistic Diversity'.
The Commission Communication on the Action Plan promoting language learning and linguistic diversity set out actions to be taken at European level during the period from 2004 to 2006 and requires follow-up action.
At programme level, the Action Plan called for the strategic use of the education andtraining programmes so as to make the most of their support for promoting language learning and linguistic diversity.
Following its previous communications on this subject- such as Promoting language learning and linguistic diversity: an action plan 2004-2006(COM(2003) 449 final) and A new framework strategy for multilingualism(COM(2005) 596 final)- the Commission is now planning to publish a new communication in early autumn on this issue, which is regarded as an institutional priority along with the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue.
Cooperation has also been strengthened in the areas of education andvocational training with the key objectives of raising teaching standards and promoting language learning and the use of modern information and communication technologies21.
Looking now at the results I am pleased that the Commission has met the challenges of the action plan promoting language learning and language diversity, delivering in nearly every area: 41 of the 47 actions will be completed by the end of 2007, 5 are continuous tasks to be implemented through the Lifelong Learning Programme, and one was cancelled but partially taken up in another action.
It also falls within the framework of the specific future objectives for education systems in the Education and Training 2010 work programme, the action plan for skills and mobility andthe action plan promoting language learning and linguistic diversity.
This report outlines the main results of the implementation of the Action Plan“Promoting language learning and linguistic diversity 2004-2006”, both at European and national level.
Furthermore, these actions will have a lasting effect as the new generation of programmes for 2007-2013(Lifelong Learning Programme, Culture, Youth in Action, Europe for Citizens, and Seventh Framework Programme for Research)will contribute to promoting language learning and linguistic diversity.
