Moreover, there were large numbers of women in the ranks of the then-ruling Ba'ath party, especially women employed in teaching, the media, military andsecurity bodies, the intelligence apparatus, the Ministry of Interior, Ministry of Defence etc.
In its report, the mission stated, inter alia, that it had found no Syrian military forces,assets or intelligence apparatus in Lebanese territory and concluded to the best of its ability that no Syrian military intelligence personnel remained in Lebanon in known locations or in military uniform.
I have requested the two Governments to extend their full cooperation to this mission and to provide it with all relevant information and documentation available concerning the former deployment of all Syrian troops andmilitary assets and the intelligence apparatus in Lebanon.
On 26 April, the Government of the Syrian Arab Republic submitted to me a letter(see annex) stating that it had completed its full withdrawal of Syrian troops,military assets and the intelligence apparatus from Lebanon, in fulfilment of its commitments to me and in fulfilment of the requirement of resolution 1559 2004.
The Security Council acknowledges the letter of 26 April 2005 from the Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Syrian Arab Republic to the Secretary-General stating that Syria has completed the full withdrawal of its forces,military assets and the intelligence apparatus from Lebanon.
A fourth element that carries equal significance in this context, which has emerged in the context of the withdrawal of Syrian troops,military assets and the intelligence apparatus, is the need for an agreement between Lebanon and the Syrian Arab Republic on the international border between them and its demarcation on the ground.
In the first semi-annual report of the Secretary-General to the Security Council on the implementation of resolution 1559(2004)(S/2005/272) it was noted that a United Nations mission was despatched to verify the full and complete withdrawal of Syrian troops,military assets and intelligence apparatus from Lebanon.

As reported by the Secretary-General, on 26 April 2005, the Government of the Syrian Arab Republic reported that it had completed its full withdrawal of Syrian troops,military assets and the intelligence apparatus from Lebanon, as required by Security Council resolution 1559 2004.
In its report, the verification team stated that it had"foundno Syrian military forces, assets or intelligence apparatus in Lebanese territory," and concluded that"to the best of its ability, with the possible exception of the Deir Al-Ashayr area, the status of which is unclear…, Syrian troops and military assets have been fully and completely withdrawn from Lebanese territory.
In reiterating the commitments made to me, President Assad, Foreign Minister Farouk Al-Shara' and Vice-Foreign Minister Walid Muallem assured the United Nations on 3 April 2005 that the second stage of the complete andfull withdrawal of all Syrian troops and assets and the intelligence apparatus would be completed by 30 April at the latest.
Of particular importance is the commitment to me by the Government of the Syrian Arab Republic to withdraw all its troops andmilitary assets and the intelligence apparatus from Lebanon by 30 April 2005 and its letter to me of 26 April, stating that it had completed the full withdrawal of its troops and military assets and the intelligence apparatus see annex.
