Physics of extra dimensions.
Extra dimensions remain elusive.
Where are all these extra dimensions?
Extra dimensions are not easy to see.
So what would these extra dimensions look like?
The extra dimensions take on a wide variety of different shapes.
Their bets are hedged on a Universe with many extra dimensions.
This idea that extra dimensions exist all around us lies at the heart of string theory.
The challenge is we don't know the shape of the extra dimensions.
It is assumed that the size of the extra dimensions is so small that they can't be detected with modern equipment.
Right now, this detector is looking for evidence… of extra dimensions.
And why can't we see these extra dimensions that connect us?
And string theory suggests that those 20 numbers have to do with the extra dimensions.
Well the answer could be the extra dimensions in string theory.
But there is one more twist to this epic hunt for warped or curled-up extra dimensions.
Did they find evidence to support extra dimensions or supersymmetry?
There's loads more stuff we'd like to look for at the LHC,like supersymmetry, extra dimensions.
But how could these tiny extra dimensions, curled up into such peculiar shapes, have any effect on our everyday world?
It has internal inconsistencies, unless we allow for something wholly unfamiliar-- extra dimensions of space.
People who have said that there_BAR_were extra dimensions of space have been labeled crackpots, or_BAR_people who are bananas.
And if it drifts away in the right pattern that we can calculate, this will be evidence that the extra dimensions are there.
But, as you can see, the extra dimensions fold in on themselves and intertwine in a very interesting shape, interesting structure.
Each is as real as every other, in the sense that there are many universes, each with a different shape, for the extra dimensions.
OK, you know, if you have extra dimensions, and they're really tightly curled up, yeah, perhaps we won't see them, if they're small enough.
So particle masses, the strengths of forces, and most importantly, the amount of dark energy would be determined by the shape of the extra dimensions.
And people who've said that there were extra dimensions of space have been labeled as, you know, crackpots, or people who were bananas.
So, imagine we have a certain kind of particle called a graviton-- that's the kind of debris we expect to be ejected out,if the extra dimensions are real.
So if we knew the shape of the extra dimensions, we should be able to calculate these features, calculate the amount of dark energy.
And we think-- and this is, I think, very exciting-- that in the next five years or so we may be able to test for the existence of these extra dimensions.
So when we talk about the extra dimensions in string theory, it's not one extra dimension, as in the older ideas of Kaluza and Klein.
