Nara Kotsu offers bus service which connects Shingu, Kumano Hongu Taisha and Gojo in Nara Prefecture, north of Wakayama. The service from Shingu to Kumano Taisha takes approximately 1 h 15 min, and the onward journey from there to Gojo is an additional 3h 50 min.
Whether you are planning to explore other areas of Wakayama Prefecture or move on to destinations further afield, the local bus will take you to the hub stations of Shingu, Kii-Katsuura, Kii-Tanabe, and Shirahama Airport. The Kuroshio Express train stops at these hubs and connect with Osaka and Kyoto, and the airport has daily flights to Tokyo.
Overnight stay in Shingu followed by a trip to Doro-kyo Gorge for an inland cruise. Alternatively, take a coastal cruise around the crop of Ki-no-Matsushima rocks and islets in Katsuura Bay. You can also book whale-watching trips rom late March to September.
To access the Kumano Kodo area, from Kii-Tanabe to Kumano Hongu Taisha, travel time takes approximately 2 h on the Ryujin Bus service. Kumano Hongu Taisha is also accessible directly from the Shirahama Onsen area on the Meiko Bus line and takes approximately 1 h 10 min. This line also connects to the coastal city of Shingu, taking about 1 h 15 min. No reservations are required to ride the Meiko Bus rapid service between the Shirahama Onsen area and Shingu.
Shingu has a wide range of eating and drinking spots, ideal for visitors looking to unwind after a day discovering the spiritual highlights of the area. With many traditional Japanese izakaya offering broad menus of local specialties and extensive sake lists, Shingu is the place to be spiritually fulfilled.
Various companies provide express highway bus service connecting Wakayama's main cities(Wakayama City, Shirahama, Shingu) to Osaka, Tokyo and Nara. They offer a budget alternative for passengers who do not mind taking an overnight bus. Some lines and operators such as the Meiko Bus service between Osaka and Shirahama run several times a day.
Renting a car from Kansai International Airport(KIX) is easy, and the drive to Wakayama City is only 45 minutes depending on the traffic. From Wakayama City, drive down the scenic coastline passing by Wakaura Bay and arriving in the beach and onsen resort town of Shirahama in just under two hours. It is a further two hours on the coast road to Shingu. The prefecture is connected by a network of expressways, highways and regional roads with plenty of full-service rest stops michi-no-eki.
Train lines running west connect Shingu to Wakayama City and on to Osaka, and those running east pass through Mie Prefecture and on to Nagoya. As Wakayama's southern transport hub, Shingu is an ideal place to end your Koyasan-Kumano journey. If you do have more time to spend in the area, consider visiting Nachisan Seiganto-ji Temple or Shirahama.
