Epimetheus was brother to Prometheus, the rebel titan who championed- and, by some accounts, created- humankind.
The picture was taken at a distance of approximately 1.2 million km from Rhea, and 1.6 million km from Epimetheus spans.
Despite warnings from his brother, Epimetheus was blinded by the beauty and the curious nature of Pandora and accepted the gift.

Once upon a time, the gods moulded the animals by blending earth with fire, and asked Prometheus and his brother Epimetheus to equip each animal with its proper qualities.
Janus and Epimetheus may have formed from a disruption of a single parent to form co-orbital satellites, but if this is the case the disruption must have happened early in the history of the satellite system.
Although the name was informally proposed soon after the initial 1966 discovery, it was not officially adopted until 1983,when Epimetheus was also named.
A faint dust ring ispresent around the region occupied by the orbits of Janus and Epimetheus, as revealed by images taken in forward-scattered light by the Cassini spacecraft in 2006.

Although the name was informally proposed soon after the initial 1966 discovery,[11] it was not officially named until 1983,[lower-alpha 1]when Epimetheus was also named.
Janus's orbit is co-orbital with that of Epimetheus. Janus's mean orbital radius from Saturn is, as of 2006(as shown by green color in the adjacent picture), only 50 km less than that of Epimetheus, a distance smaller than either moon's mean radius.
