In accordance with the understanding reached in the Council's prior consultations, the President, with the consent of the Council, extended an invitation under rule 39 of the Council's provisional rules of procedure to Angela King,Assistant Secretary-General and Special Adviser on Gender Issues and Advancement of Women.

Ms. Mayanja(Special Adviser on Gender Issues and Advancement of Women) observed that the Committee, in considering eight reports of States parties, had dealt with difficult issues and accomplished a significant amount of work.
To guide this work, the Secretary-General has asked HLCP and HLCM,in cooperation with his Special Adviser on Gender Issues and Advancement of Women, to focus on the development of a system-wide gender mainstreaming policy and strategy.
My Special Adviser on Gender Issues and Advancement of Women, in cooperation with United Nations entities, will intensify the development of new methodologies, tools and competence for gender mainstreaming and updating of existing ones.
The Council also specifically called on the Secretary-General and his Special Adviser on Gender Issues and Advancement of Women to ensure a systemic integration of a gender perspective into all policies and programmes.
