The SBSTA will hold an in-session workshop on Wednesday,8 December, on the application of methods and tools, including regional models, for assessing impacts and vulnerability and adaptation, and on the linkages between adaptation and sustainable development.
Means for enhancing the dissemination of methods and tools include establishing and strengthening existing user networks to share expertise and experiences in the application of methods and tools; and establishing mechanisms to enable the comparison of methods and tools. .
In order to improve the application of methods and tools, it was recommended that guidance and interactive mechanisms be developed to enable users to share information on different methods and tools, including their application and usefulness for different types of task.
This book synthesizes lessons learned and knowledge generated and shared on issues related to the provision of data and information,the development and application of methods and tools for impact and vulnerability assessments, and adaptation planning and practice.
Problems include deficiencies in data collection;lack of technical expertise for the application of methods and tools for specific circumstances; lack of incorporation of socio-economic data and scenarios, and quantification of potential damages; and lack of integration of adaptation concerns into activities undertaken for other objectives.
Technical capacity-building, enhancement and retention, such as through the training of trainers on modelling tools, is important in addressing gaps in expertise in the application of methods and tools and in using appropriate kinds of available climate information and GIS.
Challenges to the proper application of methods and tools identified by participants include: the lack of knowledge of the existence of certain sophisticated tools and models; the limited availability of climate data sets; and the limited capacity to use methods and tools adequately and to modify them according to specific circumstances.
The SBSTA welcomed the exchange of experiences, views and lessons learned among Parties, experts and organizations that participated in the in-session workshop on"Application of methods and tools, including regional models, for assessing impacts, vulnerability and adaptation and linkages between adaptation and sustainable development.
Areas where assistance in the application of methods and tools was deemed necessary include: participatory processes; trend analyses; aggregation of existing data(including socio-economic data and data related to climate and ecosystems); determination of options or responses; and identification of the problem and of the target audience for communicating climate change risks.
It was pointed out in the presentations and the plenary discussions that the growing awareness of the urgent need for adaptation has created an increasing demand for policy-relevant information to be used in impacts, vulnerability and adaptation assessments,which has led to a rise in the application of methods and tools that have been developed in related fields, particularly risk management.
To facilitate the discussion at the workshop, the SBSTA requested the secretariat to prepare a background paper on the application of methods and tools, including regional models, for assessing impacts and vulnerability and developing adaptation responses, inter alia, drawing on the practices of the relevant expert communities, including those responsible for dealing with natural disasters.
These include: case studies to highlight good practices and lessons learned on the application of methods and tools(including those for estimating the costsand benefits of adaptation options) contained in the Compendium on methods and tools; action-oriented guidance documents; and synthesis and analytical publications on ongoing adaptation actions.
The applications of methods and tools aimed at improving the transparency, accuracy, consistency, completeness and comparability of national GHG inventories;
Increased collaboration betweenthe climate change and DRR community on application and exchange of methods and tools can help, as well as enhanced public awareness using education, new technologies and strategies, and refining building codes and standards to include the key sectors and areas such as the agriculture sector, water, health, infrastructure and biodiversity.

This gives rise to an urgent need to enhance the formulation and dissemination of lessons learned from the application of methods, tools and interdisciplinary approaches so that conceptual strategies can lead to practicable adaptation activities.
