The UN General Assembly in 1985 invited Governments to observe annually, the 5th of December as International Volunteer Day for Economic and Social Development.
We have the honour to request, in accordance with rule 15 of the rules of procedure of the General Assembly,the inclusion in the agenda of the fifty-first session of the General Assembly of an additional item entitled"Proclamation of 7 December as International Civil Aviation Day.
At its fifty-seventh session, the General Assembly decided to designate 11 December as International Mountain Day, as from 11 December 2003 resolution 57/245.
Decides to designate 11 December as International Mountain Day, as from 11 December 2003, and encourages the international community to organize on this day events at all levels to highlight the importance of sustainable mountain development;
Decided to include in the agenda of its fifty-first session an additional item entitled"Proclamation of 7 December as International Civil Aviation Day" and to consider it directly in plenary meeting.
Welcomes the proclamation of 18 December as International Migrants Day and the invitation to Member States and intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations to observe it through, inter alia, the dissemination of information on the human rights and fundamental freedoms of migrants and on their economic, social and cultural contributions to their host and home countries, the sharing of experience and the design of actions to ensure their protection;
The universal condemnation of corruption was an encouraging sign, as was the designation of 9 December as International Anti-Corruption Day, which would help increase awareness of the problem and of the different ways in which it could be combated.
In order to promote recognition of contributions by migrant workers to their host and home countries,ILO helped to initiate a recommendation adopted last year by the Commission on Human Rights which led to the proclamation of 18 December as International Migrants Day by the United Nations General Assembly.
The United Nations General Assembly designated 11 December as“International Mountain Day”(IMD) and mandated the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations(FAO) to lead its observance.
Also encourages Member States,relevant international organizations and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime to give prominence to 9 December as International Anti-Corruption Day,as established by the General Assembly in its resolution 58/4;

The attention of the Commission is also drawn to General Assembly resolutions 55/88, entitled"International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families"; 55/92, entitled"Protection of migrants"; 55/93,entitled"Proclamation of 18 December as International Migrants Day"; and 55/100, entitled"Respect for the right to universal freedom of travel and the vital importance of family reunification.
The Year also led to the adoption of resolution 57/245,in which the General Assembly designated 11 December as International Mountain Day, as from 2003, and encouraged the international community to organize events at all levels on that day to highlight the importance of sustainable mountain development.
The President: This afternoon I wish to draw the attention of representatives to the third report of the General Committee, concerning a request by a number of delegations for the inclusion in the agenda of an additional item entitled“ Cooperation between the United Nations and the International Organization for Migration”,as well as a request by a number of delegations for the inclusion in the agenda of an additional item entitled“ Proclamation of 7 December as International Civil Aviation Day”.
Also encourages Member States,relevant international organizations and UNODC to give prominence to 9 December as International Anti-Corruption Day,as established by the General Assembly in its resolution 58/4 of 31 October 2003.
Also at the same meeting,the Council had before it a draft decision entitled"Proclamation of 18 December as International Migrant's Day"(E/2000/L.24), which had been submitted by the Vice-President of the Council, Martin Belinga-Eboutou(Cameroon), on the basis of informal consultations.
Also encourages Member States,relevant international organizations and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime to give prominence to 9 December as International Anti-Corruption Day,as established by the General Assembly in its resolution 58/4 of 31 October 2003;
