Mr. Kovács(Hungary): Let me at the outset extend to His Excellency Mr. Jan Kavan, former Foreign Minister of the Czech Republic, our sincere congratulations upon his election as President of the fifty-seventh session of the General Assembly.
In accordance with the new rules, the former deputy Prime Minister andMinister for Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic, Jan Kavan, was elected as my successor, and the Assembly also elected the 21 vice-presidents and the six Main Committee chairpersons for the fifty-seventh session of the General Assembly.
I now give the floor to the Deputy Prime Minister andMinister for Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic, His Excellency Mr. Jan Kavan, who has just been elected President of the General Assembly for the fifty-seventh session.
Therefore, we support the proposal made during the general debate by the Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic, Mr. Jan Kavan, concerning the creation within the framework of the United Nations of a special group similar to Mr. Brahimi's panel to make a comprehensive and impartial analysis of the whole range of questions related to sanctions.
In that connection, I have been informed by the Chairman of the Group of Eastern European States for the month of June 2002 that the Group has endorsed the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic, His Excellency Mr. Jan Kavan, for the presidency of the General Assembly for the fifty-seventh session.
