In its resolution 1537(2004) of 30 March 2004,the Council defined the configuration of the Mission's residual presence, which the Council decided would remain in Sierra Leone for an initial period of six months, from 1 January 2005.
In the same resolution, the Council approved my recommendation that a residual UNAMSIL presence remain in Sierra Leone, for an initial period of six monthsfrom 1 January 2005, and requested me to proceed with the planning necessary to ensure a seamless transition from the current configuration of UNAMSIL to the residual presence.
In the meantime, and in order to continue with the gradual drawdown of UNAMSIL andto ensure a seamless transition from the current configuration of UNAMSIL to its residual presence in Sierra Leone, I recommend that the mandate of the Mission be extended for a period of nine months, until 30 June 2005.
In the same resolution, the Council approved my recommendation that a residual UNAMSIL presence remain in Sierra Leone, for an initial period of six monthsfrom 1 January 2005, and requested me to proceed with the necessary planning to ensure a seamless transition from the current configuration of UNAMSIL to its residual presence.
The Committee was informed that UNAMSIL is downsizing at a more rapid pace than anticipated and that at the present time,the Mission has already concluded its transition to a residual presence in Sierra Leone consisting of 3,250 troops, 141 military observers, 80 civilian police and a civilian component as provided for in Security Council resolution 1537(2004) of 30 March 2004.

As indicated in paragraph 4 above, the revised budget provides for the scaling down of the Mission to 5,320 troops by December 2004 andsubsequently from 1 January 2005 for an initial period of six months to a residual presence with a ceiling of 3,250 troops, 141 military observers and 80 civilian police personnel.
Approves the recommendation of the Secretary-General, in paragraph 68 of his report, that the drawdown of UNAMSIL should proceed according to the"modified status quo"option towards withdrawal by December 2004, and welcomes the intention of the Secretary-General to submit additional recommendations to the Council in early 2004 concerning a residual presence of the United Nations;
