Standardization of environmental data.

The Secretary-General said that three international workshops would be convened by the Authority in the next three years: one to review the outcomes of the geologic model project, another on collaboration in marine scientific research, and the third on standardization of environmental data relating to polymetallic sulphides deposits in the Area.
The Commission heard a report on the outcomes of the Authority's workshops on standardization of environmental data and information and on prospects for international collaboration in marine environmental research.
The Authority therefore has the opportunity to initiate the standardization of environmental and geologic data concurrently with the exploration for these deposits.
The Secretary-General of the Authority reported that a comprehensive review of the quality of environmental data provided by contractors had been initiated, leading as a first step to the convening of three workshops in 2013 and 2014 to address the need for taxonomic standardization with regard to three major faunal groups.
The meeting began with presentations on the current status of environmental data that have been provided to the Authority and the status of relevant publicly available data and the need for standardization. .
This framework includes the guidelines recommendedby the Legal and Technical Commission of the Authority to contractors for environmental impact assessments, standardization of relevant environmental data and information and international cooperative scientific projects designed to increase the international community's knowledge of species ranges, species distribution and gene flow in the various mineral provinces of the Area.
SCAR and COMNAP are jointly developing an environmental monitoring handbook that will aid the standardization of data collection methodologies in the Antarctic region.
