Prospecting and exploration for polymetallic sulphides and cobalt-rich ferromanganese crusts in the Area.
Other delegations expressed the view that the scientific work to be undertaken by the Authority should be synchronized with the adoption of the regulations on polymetallic sulphides and cobalt-rich ferromanganese crusts.

With respect to the activities of the International Seabed Authority, we are impressed by the progress it made in elaborating draftrules for locating and mining polymetallic sulphides and cobalt-rich ferromanganese crusts.
The work involved may include monitoring metal trends and prices for the metals and by-products associated with polymetallic nodules,polymetallic sulphides and cobalt-rich ferromanganese crusts; resource evaluation of deposits based on prospecting and exploration data; formulation of cost models associated with polymetallic nodule mining and the processing of polymetallic nodules; and other statistics of relevance to membership in the Council.

The secretariat provided the Commission with information on the status of prospecting and of contracts for exploration for polymetallic nodules,polymetallic sulphides and cobalt-rich ferromanganese crusts in the Area(ISBA/20/LTC/5, ISBA/20/LTC/9 and ISBA/20/LTC/9/Add.1). The Commission took note of the information provided and also noted that it was anticipated that, by the end of 2014, there would be 26 contracts for exploration, with consequent implications for the increasing workload of the secretariat and the Commission.

During the period 2009-2010, the secretariat of the Authority will continue to develop its environmental databases to cover the three mineral resources currently under consideration by the Authority: polymetallic nodules,polymetallic sulphides and cobalt-rich ferromanganese crusts.
These programmes address environments where polymetallic sulphides and cobalt-rich ferromanganese crusts are found.
Following many years of work by the Legal and Technical Commission and the Council, the Authority should complete in 2011 a comprehensive exploration code covering the three main types of seabed mineral resources-- polymetallic nodules,polymetallic sulphides and cobalt-rich ferromanganese crusts.

The Russian Federation requests the Authority to develop regulations on prospecting and exploration for polymetallic sulphides and cobalt-rich ferromanganese crusts.

Initially, the central data repository will be based on three focal points:the nodules interactive database, the sulphides and cobalt-rich ferromanganese crust interactive database and a video and image gallery.
To date, the Authority has issued Regulations on Prospecting and Exploration for Polymetallic Nodules in the Area and is in the process of adopting similar regulations on prospecting and exploration for polymetallic sulphides and cobalt-rich ferromanganese crusts see section A below.
III. Potential environmental impacts from exploration for polymetallic sulphides and cobalt-rich ferromanganese crusts.

The Secretary-General stated that the completion of a comprehensive exploration code covering the three main types of seabed mineral resources-- polymetallic nodules,polymetallic sulphides and cobalt-rich ferromanganese crusts-- would mark an important milestone in the evolution of the Authority.
The Secretary-General noted that, as the Authority had now completed the parts of the mining code relating to prospecting and exploration of polymetallic nodules, polymetallic sulphides and cobalt-rich ferromanganese crusts, the current challenge was to develop regulations on the exploitation of these minerals.
