With the active participation of your Personal Envoy, this meeting enabled the strengthening of family visits by air and paved the way to the inauguration of family visits by land, in conformity with the requests made by the Security Council in its resolution 1920 2010.
May I remind you that we raised the issue of prisoner Saytan Waliy andother Syrian detainees from the occupied Syrian Golan with Mr. Michael Williams, your personal envoy to the Middle East, at one of our meetings with him on 19 January 2007 and he promised us that he would make all possible efforts in this regard.
Since the resignation of your Personal Envoy for Western Sahara, Mr. James Baker, there have been persistent reports in certain circles about various steps, initiatives and suggestions in relation to the question of Western Sahara and the development of Algerian-Moroccan relations.
With respect to the negotiations concerning the difference over the name of my country, the Republic of Macedonia has engaged actively and constructively in good faith negotiations since the adoption of Security Council resolution 817(1993),through the mediation process led most recently by your Personal Envoy, Matthew Nimetz.
In this context, and despite the counterproductive attitude of the other parties,the efforts of your Personal Envoy have led to tangible achievements, with the adoption of an initial platform containing three issues related to strengthening the role of the Personal Envoy, natural resources and demining.
We have notified you, through your Personal Envoy and by our numerous letters, that we have implemented all the provisions of the resolution except for a single point relating to the venue of the trial, and we believe that it is possible to reach a satisfactory solution on this matter if the States concerned will agree to sit down directly with the Great Jamahiriya to negotiate thereon in order to bring about a trial that is just and fair.
I should like to thank you sincerely for your letter informing me of the visit of your Personal Envoy, Mr. James Baker III, to Algeria and for the interest you have consistently shown in the settlement of the question of Western Sahara since your election to the post of Secretary-General of the United Nations.
It is in this spirit that my country has hosted your Personal Envoy, Mr. Christopher Ross, during his three visits to the region since April 2013 to launch a new approach based on discreet and confidential contacts with the parties in order to establish conditions conducive to the resumption of negotiations.
