The participants recognized the need for a simplification and streamlining of reporting in the area of sustainable development.

Streamlining of reporting, as well as collective efforts to harmonize data set and standardize methodologies, could go a long way towards alleviating some of the burden on national institutions, as well as making regional and international-level monitoring, data collection, reviewing and reporting more efficient.

While the issue was under the active consideration of the Inter-Agency Committee on Sustainable Development, ACC welcomed initiatives aimed at(a) the streamlining of reporting by Governments to the United Nations system,including reporting in relation to conventions and treaties and(b) the streamlining of reports to the various governing bodies related to the implementation of Agenda 21 or to sustainable development issues in general.
The Commission also discussed strengthening support to and enhancing effectiveness of the treaty bodies under its agenda item 18," effective functioning of the human rights mechanisms",during which Member States raised issues with regard to duplication, streamlining of reporting and coordination and information-sharing among human rights treaty bodies.

Calls upon the Executive Director to promote further international action to enhance synergy between the programmes of the United Nations Environment Programme and multilateral environmental conventions, with full respect for the status of the secretariats of the conventions and the autonomous decision-making prerogatives of the conferences of the parties to the conventions concerned,including streamlining of reporting, capacity-building and other actions aimed at the implementation of Agenda 21;/.
