Glibc is the new Linux libc.
Additional Notes: Glibc version 2.15.
Glibc finally free software.
I suggest initially trying glibc.
Glibc 2 is the latest version of the GNU C Library.
Setting up a NIS Client using glibc 2.x.
The glibc uses"traditional NIS", so you need to start ypbind.
For more information, read the glibc documentation.
The glibc package contains a library written in the programming language of C.
Now we come to the most important thing: the glibc install.
This HOWTO covers installing the glibc 2 library on an existing Linux system.
It comes from the standard C libraries, on a GNU/Linux system, glibc.
As base System you need a glibc based Distribution like Debian, Red Hat Linux or SuSE Linux.
If you are using a newer distribution of Linux, you will most likely have glibc.
If you are installing glibc 2 on an important system, you might want to use the test install.
Now that I know more,I will try to explain in a very simple way what glibc does.
This HOWTO covers installing the glibc 2 library on an existing Linux system.
The glibc package contains a FAQ with additional information that you should check if you are having problems.
Obtaining and compiling the source There are several versions of glibc available, but not in all cases are new versions really better than the old ones.
The glibc 2 HOWTO covers installing and using the GNU C Library version 2(libc 6) on Linux systems.
Alternatively, you could use the glib library(not to be confused with glibc) with its portable support for Dynamic Loading of Modules.
The glibc 2 consists of the glibc package and three optional add-on packages, LinuxThreads, Locale, and Crypt.
Compile was introduced in GoboLinux 011, but already features a considerable(and ever-growing) number of recipes, and is able to compile all kinds of software, including Glibc, GCC, KDE and the Linux kernel.
There are several versions of glibc available, but not in all cases are new versions really better than the old ones.
Glibc 2 is now part of the base package of the hamm version of Debian, and will be the primary libc when Debian 2.0 is released.
However, if/usr is on a different partition and you install glibc as a test library in /usr/i486-linuxglibc2, any new programs you compile with glibc will not work until your/usr partition is mounted.
To install glibc you need a system with nothing running on it, since many processes(for example sendmail) always try to use the library and therefore block the files from being replaced.
Major upgrades include KDE 3.5.8, Glibc 2.5 and Xorg 7.2, as well as new versions of the GoboLinux management tools.
To use the library, the GNU glibc locales need to be installed, which are provided as a separate package(usually named glibc-locale) normally installed by default.
If you have installed glibc as a test library, you need to install the files into the directory you installed glibc into(such as /usr/i486-linuxglibc2 for the example in the previous sections).
