Mr. Hellgren(Sweden): Mr. President, since this is the first time I have taken the floor during your presidency, allow me first to congratulate you and pledge the full support of my delegation.
In addition, thanks to the equally kind invitation from the Ambassador of Sweden, Magnus Hellgren, I carried out very constructive consultations with the member countries of the European Union.
Mr. Hellgren(Sweden): Mr. President, like others and on behalf of the Swedish Government, I would like to express our great satisfaction with the decision we collectively took a few minutes ago.

Mr. Hellgren(Sweden): I am speaking on behalf of the European Union(EU) in explanation of vote on draft resolution A/C.1/64/L.4, entitled"The risk of nuclear proliferation in the Middle East.
I would also like to join other delegates in extending a welcome to the Ambassador of the Democratic People'sRepublic of Korea and to wish Mr. Hellgren of Sweden all the best as he embarks on his sabbatical.
I would also like to thank my colleague Mr. Hellgren of Sweden for his well-put introduction and his explanation of the state of play in Geneva on the subject.

Mr. Hellgren(Sweden): I should like to speak on behalf of the European Union(EU) in connection with draft resolution A/C.1/64/L.39, entitled"Developments in the field of information and telecommunications in the context of international security.
The point, as we are all well aware,is that several proposals have been drafted, as Mr. Hellgren explained, and that last year a remarkable cross-regional consensus emerged, led by a leading member of the Non-Aligned Movement, set out in document CD/1864.
Mr. Hellgren(Sweden): Mr. President, since this is the first time I have taken the floor during your presidency, allow me to express our full support and our congratulations to you at this important juncture, and also to welcome our new Turkish colleague.
Here I should like to take this opportunity to bid my farewells, our farewells and the farewells of the ambassadors of the States members of the Conference on Disarmament to Ambassador Magnus Hellgren of Sweden, who is taking a sabbatical after having worked tirelessly in Geneva for the past six years.
I would also like to thank our departing good friend,Magnus Hellgren, for his vision, enthusiasm and determination over the years, as exemplified by his eloquent speech, and wish him all the very best for the future.
Mr. Hellgren(Sweden): Mr. President, first of all, let me say that my delegation also fully aligns itself with the statement on behalf of the European Union read out by the representative of Spain, which included the main elements of our national position.
Mr. Hellgren(Sweden): Madam President, I speak today in my capacity as President of the European Union, just to remind all delegations that the EU expressed its views on the current situation in the Conference on Disarmament in a statement here in this hall on 10 August.
Mr. Hellgren(Sweden): Mr. President, first of all, since it is the first time I take the floor during your presidency, but also the last, allow me to wish you every success in your important office in the remaining part of this session and pledge the full support of the Swedish delegation for your work.
