I voted in favour of the motion for a resolution on joint programming of research to combat neurodegenerative diseases, because I believe it is necessary to strengthen measures to promote research into these diseases, in particular, Alzheimer's disease, at European level.

I should mention in this connection the conclusions of 16 December 2008 on public health strategies to combat neurodegenerative diseases associated with ageing and, in particular, Alzheimer's disease,and the conclusions of 3 December 2009 on joint programming of research in Europe, covering, in particular, the launch of the pilot joint programming initiative dedicated to the fight against neurodegenerative diseases and Alzheimer's disease in particular.
I voted in favour of the resolution on the joint programming of research to combat neurodegenerative diseases, in particular Alzheimer's, because I feel it is important to speed up the joint research work carried out by the Member States in relation to neurodegenerative diseases.
At the political level, clear support for enhanced and more effective coordination of research activities in Europe has been reiterated over the last 15 years: the 2008 Spring European Council encouraged the Commission andMember States"to continue developing initiatives for joint programming of research in areas where this approach is appropriate, allowing a more strategic and better structured approach to the launch of new joint programmes and common calls for projects from the end of 2010".
(10) Joint programming of research on connecting knowledge for climate change would contribute to the coordination of research in this area, and to a fully operational European Research Area on climate change, strengthening Europe's leadership and competiveness of the research in this field.
(11) Joint programming of research on demographic change and population ageing would provide for coordination of research in this area, contributing significantly to construction of a fully operational ERA on ageing and strengthening Europe's leadership and competitiveness of research in this field.
(9) Joint programming of research on sustainable urban development would provide for coordination of research and innovation in this area, contributing significantly to construction of a fully operational ERA on research and innovation regarding urban development and strengthening Europe's leadership and competitiveness of research in this field.
