Analyzing Data with PivotTables.
When you use formulas in PivotTables, you should know about the following formula syntax rules and formula behavior.
This will beimportant when it comes time to connect your PivotTables to Slicers and Timeline controls.
Slicer- a filter enhancement for PivotTables that helps us to quickly and intuitively drill down and analyse data in our spreadsheet.
You can also establish relationships between tables, enabling exploration and analysis in PivotTables, Power Pivot, and Power View.
For our example, these PivotTables can change rows, but not columns so we placed them on the same row with a blank column in between each one.
Note: If you're using aversion of Excel earlier than Excel 2016,“PivotTables” may be under“Tables” or“Data” along the top navigation.
To use multiple tables in the Excel Data Model, you can now connect to andimport data from additional data sources into Excel as tables or PivotTables.
For our dashboard, we added shapes around the PivotTables and turned off Headings and Gridlines from the View tab.
C: If you convert imported data into tables, they can be included in the Data Model, and be made available to PivotTables, Power Pivot, and Power View.
If you open a workbook that contains PivotTables, you can sort and filter the PivotTable, and you can cut, copy, paste, or delete the entire PivotTable.
We recommend that you begin with simple formulas and relationships to see how context works, and then begin experimenting with simple formulas in PivotTables.
When you import or load the data, and then use the data in calculations or in PivotTables, the data is converted to one of the Power Pivot data types.
PivotCharts complement PivotTables by adding visualizations to the summary data in a PivotTable, and allow you to easily see comparisons, patterns, and trends.
With Power Pivot and DAX, you can extend the Data Model by creating custom formulas, then create reports based on those formulas and calculations in PivotTables and in Power View.
Because the data is in Excel,it is immediately available to PivotTables, PivotCharts, Power View, and other features in Excel that you use to aggregate and interact with data.
In Excel 2010, filtering on multiple items is much faster, and data that is not visible(such as hidden items in totals)is included when you apply filters in both OLAP and non-OLAP PivotTables.
Calculations based on OLAP source data For PivotTables that are created from OLAP cubes, the summarized values are precalculated on the OLAP server before Excel displays the results.
A document theme is a predefined set of colors, fonts, and effects(such as line styles and fill effects) that will be available when you format your worksheet data or other items, such as tables, PivotTables, or charts.
The ALLEXCEPT function isparticularly useful when you are creating PivotTables that might be filtered on many different columns, and you want to control the values that are used in the formula.
In PivotTables, if you group data by the one side of the relationship, any unmatched data on the many side of the relationship is grouped together and will be included in totals with a blank row heading.
Slicer Connections- Slicers will only be connected to the PivotTable you used to create them, so you need to select each Slicer then go to Slicer Toolsgt; Optionsgt; Report Connections andcheck which PivotTables you want connected to each.
With new chart types and improvements to PivotTables and business intelligence(BI), Microsoft Excel 2016 makes it easier to work with large amounts of data and give it even more meaning.
Important: PivotTables can't overlap one another, so make sure that your design will allow enough space between them to allow for them to expand and contract as values are filtered, added or removed.
In Excel 2007 and later, worksheet features(such as formulas, charts, PivotTables, and Visual Basic for Application(VBA) projects) are no longer supported in these file formats, and they will be lost when you open a file in this file format again in Excel.
As in non-OLAP PivotTables, you can now add the same measure multiple times to the values area in OLAP PivotTables so that you can show the value and a calculation based on the value at the same time.
In Excel 2007 and later, worksheet features(such as formulas, charts, PivotTables, and Visual Basic for Application(VBA) projects) are no longer supported in these file formats, and they will be lost when you open a file in this file format again in Excel.
Calculations based on non-OLAP source data In PivotTables that are based on other types of external data or on worksheet data, Excel uses the Sum summary function to calculate value fields that contain numeric data, and the Count summary function to calculate data fields that contain text.
It doesn't matter if your PivotTables are connected to a tabular or multi-dimensional model, Any PivotTable connected to Microsoft SQL Server Analysis Services, 3rd party OLAP providers, or the Power Pivot Data Model will likely give you fresh data, faster.
