Ad hoc missions.
During the biennium 1990-1991, there was a total of 11 ad hoc missions undertaken by the good offices of the Secretary-General.

The international bodies that have recently undertaken ad hoc missions to Equatorial Guinea or have produced socio-economic studies of the country agree in their description of the situation and make very similar assessments.
The granting of exemptions and their monitoring would require an enhanced capacity on the part of the Secretariat, particularly when the Security Council orthe relevant sanctions committee request the Secretary-General to carry out ad hoc missions to verify the implementation of the exemptions and submit periodic reports.

Another major study publishedby the UNU Press, entitled"United Nations peacekeeping operations: ad hoc missions, permanent engagement", 5 identifies lessons that could be learned from past peacekeeping practices, as they have evolved over the past 10 years or so.
As shown in table 3.1 above, ad hoc missions undertaken at the request of the Security Council and/or the General Assembly and Governments, or at the initiative of the Secretary-General in the exercise of his good offices related to preventive diplomacy and peacemaking are included under subsection C. The activities under the subsection will either have been completed by 1996 or are of an extraordinary nature and their extension cannot be foreseen at this stage.
The Advisory Committee notes in paragraph 3.59 of the proposed programme budget that since activities relating to ad hoc missions will either have been completed by 1996 or are of an extraordinary nature that their extension cannot be foreseen at this stage, no provisions are being requested at this time.
As indicated in paragraph 3.4 andshown in table 3.22 above, ad hoc missions undertaken at the request of the Security Council and/or the General Assembly and Governments, or at the initiative of the Secretary-General in the exercise of his good offices related to preventive diplomacy and peacemaking, are included under subsection C. The resources of these activities, estimated at $23,882,900, reflect the appropriations granted by the General Assembly in 1996 following its approval of the proposed programme budget for the biennium 1996-1997.
Takes note of the proposals of the Secretary-General in section 3 of the proposed programme budget relating to the full range of administrative support for ad hoc missions under the good offices of the Secretary-General, peace-keeping operations and other special and field missions, and of the comments and recommendations of the Advisory Committee;
