In view of the fact that Portuguese Gypsies are the main victims of racial prejudice and that many of them are in situations of social exclusion, the Government,through Council of Ministers resolution 175/96, decided to establish the Working Group for the Equality and Integration of the Gypsies, an advisory body which reports to the Office of the High Commissioner for Immigration and Ethnic Minorities.

The same Government Decision created, in the Department for the Protection of National Minorities, the National Office for the Social Integration of Roma/Gypsies(now the National Roma Office); its purpose is to ensure permanent and effective contact with the Roma/Gypsy organizations in order to identify and put into practice the most appropriate solutions to meet the specific needs of these persons.
The Committee notes with appreciation the State party's efforts to promote equal opportunity for Roma(Gypsies) and their better integration in society.
