On Friday, February 6, the President of Latvia Andris Bērziņš met with the Vice-President of the European Commission Maroš Šefčovič to discuss opportunities to strengthen energy security, especially development of infrastructure andestablishment of a functioning internal energy market.
Mr. Maroš Šefčovič informed that the European Commission presented the concept of the EU Energy Union that day, whose key elements included solidarity among Member States,a functioning and well-connected internal energy market, strong energy diplomacy, innovation, science, and research, decarbonisation of economy, competitive energy and energy independence coupled with energy performance, and management issues.
Rather, to truly boost energy security, EU public investments should go to home grown wind and solar power, high energy efficiency potential andan actual decrease in energy consumption along with better integration of EU internal energy market and infrastructure.
Apart from these objectives, the Strategy outlined steps to achieve them: provision of alternative means of delivery of energy commodities to countries most heavily dependent on Russia; establishment of the Southern Corridor for alternative sources of gas supplies from the Middle East, South Caucasus and Central Asia via Turkey; ensuring the possibility of reverse flows to and from Ukraine via Romania and the Slovak Republic;clearly defined measures for the unification of the internal energy market.
The basic concepts of the Turkish government's energy policy are the drive for energy diversity,the maximum use of internal Turkish energy sources, the liberalization of the energy market, and the improvement of energy efficiency.
The role of energy efficiency in the preparation of the countries from Southeast Europe for integration in the Internal European energy market;
