The Legal Subcommittee noted with satisfaction that a symposium entitled“Review of the Status of the Outer Space Treaties”, sponsored by the International Institute of Space Law in cooperationwith the European Centre for Space Law, both based in Paris, was held following the 605th meeting of the Legal Subcommittee, on 23 March 1998, and agreed that the Institute and the Centre should again be invited, at its thirty-eighth session, to hold a symposium on space law.
The Legal Subcommittee noted with satisfaction that a symposium entitled“Celebrating the 30th Anniversary of the Outer Space Treaty”, sponsored by the International Institute for Space Law(IISL) in cooperation with the European Centre for Space Law(ECSL), both based in Paris, was held at the close of the afternoon meeting of the Legal Subcommittee on 1 April 1997, and agreed that IISL and ECSL should again be invited, at its thirty-seventh session, to hold a symposium on space law.
The Legal Subcommittee noted with satisfaction that the Safety Framework for Nuclear Power Source Applications in Outer Space(A/AC.105/934), adopted by the Scientific and Technical Subcommittee at its forty-sixth session, in 2009, and endorsed by the Committee at its fifty-second session, in 2009, had considerably advanced international cooperation in ensuring the safe use of nuclear power sources in outer space and had facilitated the development of international space law.
The Legal Subcommittee noted with satisfaction that the adoption of the Safety Framework for Nuclear Power Source Applications in Outer Space(A/AC.105/934) by the Scientific and Technical Subcommittee at its forty-sixth session, in 2009, and the endorsement of the Safety Framework by the Committee at its fifty-second session, in 2009, constituted an important step with regard to the progressive development of international space law and considerably advanced international cooperation in ensuring the safe use of nuclear power sources in outer space.
The Subcommittee noted with satisfaction that the ITU World Radiocommunication Conference held in 2007 had decided, in accordance with the principle of due diligence, to revise the application of the basic principles of article 44 of the ITU Constitution in the light of the recommendations made by the Legal Subcommittee at its thirty-ninth session and, pursuant to article 12 of the ITU Constitution, to conduct studies on ways to quantify and analyse the application of those principles.
The Subcommittee noted with satisfaction that a symposium entitled"Legal Implications of Space Applications for Global Climate Change", organized by the International Institute of Space Law(IISL) and the European Centre for Space Law(ECSL) of ESA, had been held during the current session of the Subcommittee, on 31 March and 1 April.

The Subcommittee noted with satisfaction that the publication entitled Space Law: Basic Legal Documents, which had been edited and published by the Institute of Air and Space Law at Cologne, Germany, since 1989, had become available as an electronic database, in addition to being available as a hard-copy loose-leaf collection.
The Subcommittee noted with satisfaction that a symposium entitled"Reinforcing the Registration Convention", sponsored by the International Institute of Space Law(IISL) of IAF in cooperation with the European Centre for Space Law(ECSL), had been held during the current session of the Legal Subcommittee, on 24 March 2003.
The Subcommittee noted with satisfaction that a symposium entitled"Legal aspects of disaster management and the contribution of the law of outer space", organized by the International Institute of Space Law(IISL) of IAF in cooperation with the European Centre for Space Law(ECSL) of ESA, had been held during the current session of the Subcommittee, on 3 April.
The Committee noted with satisfaction that the Legal Subcommittee had been provided with reports from various international organizations on their activities relating to space law and agreed that international organizations should again be invited by the Secretariat to provide reports to the Subcommittee at its forty-fifth session, in 2006.
The Legal Subcommittee also noted with satisfaction that the Scientific and Technical Subcommittee had endorsed a new three-year workplan for the Working Group on the Use of Nuclear Power Sources in Outer Space for the period 2007-2010.
The Committee recalled its agreement made at its fifty-fourth session, in 2011, on certain methods to enhance the organization of work of its sessions and the sessions of the Scientific andTechnical Subcommittee and Legal Subcommittee, and noted with satisfaction that those measures had already been applied successfully in the sessions of the Subcommittees in 2012.
The Legal Subcommittee further noted with satisfaction the agreement that a partnership be established between the Scientific and Technical Subcommittee and the International Atomic Energy Agency(IAEA) by means of a joint experts group in order to prepare and publish the safety framework for nuclear power source applications in outer space by 2010.
The Committee also noted with satisfaction that the Working Group had agreed on a programme of work for the forty-sixth session of the Legal Subcommittee in 2007 A/AC.105/871, annex I.
This delegation noted with satisfaction that in accordance with General Assembly resolution 56/51 of 10 December 2001, the Legal Subcommittee of the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space had considered the Convention on International Interests in Mobile Equipment and the preliminary draft Protocol on Matters Specific to Space Assets.
