A report entitled“Observance of the International Year for the Eradication of Poverty(1996) and recommendations for the rest of the Decade”(A/52/573) was submitted to the Assembly at its fifty-second session.
Pursuant to General Assembly resolution 50/107,a report of the Secretary-General provided the Assembly with a summary of action taken by the United Nations system in observance of the International Year for the Eradication of Poverty A/51/443.
As noted in the report of the Secretary-General on the observance of the International Year for the Eradication of Poverty, poverty in the developing countries had declined in relative terms, but had increased in absolute terms.
Recalling also General Assembly resolution 49/110 of 19 December 1994 and other relevant resolutions of the Assembly related to international cooperation for the eradication of poverty in developing countries as well as Assembly resolution 50/107 of 20 December 1995 on the observance of the International Year for the Eradication of Poverty and proclamation of the first United Nations Decade for the Eradication of Poverty.
Recalling further Assembly resolution 50/107 of 20 December 1995 on the observance of the International Year for the Eradication of Poverty and proclamation of the first United Nations Decade for the Eradication of Poverty.
In relation to the observance of the International Year for the Eradication of Poverty, the Fund is going to upgrade a number of already planned activities, such as project implementation workshops to include"lessons learned" and"best practices.
It will be recalledthat the General Assembly, on 20 December 1995, adopted resolution 50/107, entitled"Observance of the International Year for the Eradication of Poverty and proclamation of the first United Nations Decade for the Eradication of Poverty.
In relation to the observance of the International Year for the Eradication of Poverty and plans for the First United Nations Decade for the Eradication of Poverty, many United Nations system-wide initiatives were put into place to ensure a coordinated follow-up to the recent global conferences.
Progress on the anti-poverty front was last reported to the General Assembly in the report of the Secretary-General entitled“Observance of the International Year for the Eradication of Poverty(1996) and recommendations for the rest of the Decade” A/52/573.
Kenya therefore wishes to reaffirm its support for observance of the International Year for the Eradication of Poverty in 1996 and the proclamation of the first United Nations Decade for the Eradication of Poverty, as contained in General Assembly resolution 50/107.
In Resolution A/RES/50/107 of January 1996, the General Assembly referred to the Observance of the International Year for the Eradication of Poverty, and proclaimed the first United Nations decade for the Eradication of Poverty 1997-2006.
Recalling also its resolution 50/107 of 20 December 1995 on the observance of the International Year for the Eradication of Poverty and the proclamation of the first United Nations Decade for the Eradication of Poverty(1997- 2006), as well asthe outcomes of the major United Nations conferences and summits, including the International Conference on Financing for Development, the five-year review of the World Food Summit and the World Summit on Sustainable Development as well as the Fourth Ministerial Conference of the World Trade Organization.
Recalling also its resolution 50/107 of 20 September 1995 on the observance of the International Year for the Eradication of Poverty and the proclamation of the first Decade of the United Nations for the Eradication of Poverty 1997-2006.
Recalling also its resolution 50/107 of 20 December 1995 on the observance of the International Year for the Eradication of Poverty and the proclamation of the first United Nations Decade for the Eradication of Poverty(1997- 2006), as well as the declarations and programmes of action of the major United Nations conferences and summits of the 1990s as they relate to the eradication of poverty.
Copies of the advanced unedited version of the“Report of the Secretary-General on Observance of the International Year for the Eradication of Poverty(1996) and Recommendations for the Rest of the Decade”, submitted under General Assembly agenda item 97(f), are now available for delegations outside of room S-2994.

Recalling also its resolution 50/107 of 20 December 1995 on the observance of the International Year for the Eradication of Poverty and the proclamation of the first United Nations Decade for the Eradication of Poverty(1997- 2006), as well as the declarations and programmes of action of the major United Nations conferences and summits, their follow-up and the need for their implementation, as they relate to the eradication of poverty.
Recalling its resolutions 48/183 of 21 December 1993, 49/110 of 19 December 1994 and50/107 of 20 December 1995 related to the observance of the International Year for the Eradication of Poverty and proclamation of the first United Nations Decade for the Eradication of Poverty, and all other relevant resolutions relating to international cooperation for the eradication of poverty in developing countries.
In relation with the implementation of Commitment 2, on the eradication of poverty and the observance of the International Year for the Eradication of Poverty, all regional commissions are planning a large number of activities, including expert group meetings, studies and publications, the development of regional programmes of action and of indicators and statistical profiles of social groups in poverty.
