The Director of the Cambodia Office underlined that the United Nations Commission on Human Rights, in paragraph 8(b) of its resolution 1994/61, adopted on 4 March 1994, taking note of a recommendation made by the Special Representative, had identified as a priority area financial assistancefor a proper secretariat, equipment and training of the National Assembly Commission for the Protection of Human Rights and Reception of Complaints.
In addition to the assistance given during the early part of 1994, at the request of several members of the National Assembly,particularly from the Commission on Protection of Human Rights and Reception of Complaints, the Centre for Human Rights has prepared detailed comments on the draft law with suggested amendments.
He also met with several senior government representatives, including the Prime Minister, the Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the Minister of Finance, the Minister of Women's and Veteran's Affairs, the Co-Minister of the Interior, the Chairman and members of the governmental Cambodian Human Rights Committee, the President of the Senate, the President of the National Assembly, and the President andmembers of the Senate Commission for Human Rights and Reception of Complaints.
On that occasion, he met with the Cambodian Ministers of Justice and of Information, the acting Chairman of the National Assembly,the Chairman of the Commission on Human Rights and Reception of Complaints of the National Assembly and the legal expert attached to the Council of Ministers of the Government of Cambodia.
In the National Assembly the Special Representative met the Chairman, Kem Sokha, andother members of the parliamentary Commission on Human Rights and Reception of Complaints and was informed about plans to strengthen the capacity of the Commission to make its own independent investigations into allegations of human rights violations.
