Other ways and means for the United Nations to  address the issues related to international migration and development.
By providing a venue for Governments to  address issues related to international migration and development in a systematic and  comprehensive way, the Global Forum brings together Government expertise from all regions, promotes dialogue, cooperation and  partnerships, and  fosters practical and  action-oriented outcomes at the national, regional and  global levels.
Ecuador supports the recommendation of the Secretary-General that the Global Forum examine in depth and systematically all topics related to international migration and development.
Over 69 per cent of countries reported that they had addressed"issues related to international migration and development" by creating institutionsand  programmes, policies and/or strategies.
He welcomed the organization of the Global Forum on Migration and Development  as an ideal stage for the discussion of all topics related to international migration and development.
In cooperation with its partners, the secretariat organized several workshops and  meetings related to international migration and development, including the above-mentioned Workshop on Strengthening Capacities to  Deal with International Migration,  which discussed integrating international migration  into national development  plans(see para.), and  an expert group meeting on strengthening capacities for migration  management in Central Asia see para.
The present report has examined the actual and potential mechanisms available within the United Nations system for addressing the issues related to international migration and development.
The Commission on Population and Development, at its twenty-eighth session in 1995, decided to  devote its session in 1997 to  the consideration of issues related to international migration and development, 7 while the Assembly in its resolution 50/123 of 20 December 1995, decided to  include in the provisional agenda of its fifty-second session the item entitled"International migration and development,  including the convening of a United Nations conference on international migration and development. .
The Committee thus represents a valuable mechanism within the United Nations system for the examination,from a substantive perspective, of issues related to international migration and development.
Requests the International  Research and  Training Institute for the Advancement of Women, in accordance with its mandate,to  actively participate in and  contribute to  discussions on issues related to international migration and development, in particular in the high-level dialogue thereon to  be held in September 2006 during the sixty-first session of the General Assembly;
One could also mention the work of the Population Division and  the Statistical Division of the Department for Economic and  Social Information and  Policy Analysis, and  the decision taken by the Commission on Population and Development to  devote its 1997 session to  examining the issues related to international migration and development.
Recognizing the importance, from an analytical and  operational point of view, of identifying the existing linkages among the social, economic, political and cultural factors related to international migration and development and  of the need for comprehensive, coherent and effective policies on international migration  based on the spirit of genuine partnership and  common understanding.
Several speakers welcomed the proposal of the Secretary-General to  set up a global consultative forum that would allow informal consultations, so as to find common ground on specific issues related to international migration and development.
Further requests the Institute, in accordance with its mandate and  in close coordination with the United Nations Population Fund, the United Nations Children's Fund and  other relevant United Nations programmes and  funds, to  actively participate in and contribute to  discussions on issues related to international migration and development, in particular in the preparation forand  during the high-level dialogue thereon to  be held in September 2006, during the sixty-first session of the General Assembly;
Recalling that Member States participating in the High-level Dialogue on International Migration and Development  expressed interest in continuing the dialogue on migration and development, and  that there was widespread support for the proposal of the Secretary-General to  create a global forum to  address,in depth and  in a systematic manner, all topics related to international migration and development.

The report summarizes national policies on international migration and  the views of Governments regarding the convening of a United Nations conference on international migration and development;  describes recent activities carried out by the relevant organizations at the regional and international  levels, taking account of the lessons on migration  management and  policies that they havelearned through their activities; and  addresses the possible mechanisms within the United Nations system to  examine the issues related to international migration and development.
The Secretary-General's report suggests the establishment of a consultative forum that would offer Governments a venue for discussing issues related to international migration and development systematically and  comprehensively.
It also recalls that Member States participating in the High-level Dialogue on International Migration and Development  expressed interest in continuing the dialogue on migration and  supported the proposal of the Secretary-General to  create a global forum to  address, in depth and  in a systematic manner,all topics related to international migration and development.
At the High-level Dialogue on International Migration and Development  held in 2006, the Secretary-General proposed the creation of a global forum as a venue for discussing issues related to international migration and development in a systematic and  comprehensive way see A/61/515.
In that context, we believe that the Global Forum on Migration and Development  proposed by the Secretary-General can provide a privileged space for a full and coherent discussion of all the topics related to international migration and development.
Calls upon the Working Group on International Migration  of the Administrative Committee on Coordination Task Force on Basic Social Services for All to  ensure that international migration  remains a topic of concentration in its follow-up to  the International  Conference on Population and Development,  inter alia,by compiling a comprehensive list of issues related to international migration and development and  identifying the intergovernmental mechanisms available to address them, to be submitted to the Commission on Population and Development  at its thirty-first session;
In resolution 1997/2, the Economic and  Social Council called upon the Working Group on International Migration  of the Administrative Committee on Coordination Task Force on Basic Social Services for All to  submit to  the Commission on Population and Development  at its thirty-first session a comprehensive list of issues related to international migration and development and  identifying the intergovernmental mechanisms available to address them.
The United Nations has a comparative advantage in promoting the collection and compilation of compatible statistical and  other data relating to international migration and development.
As a developing country at the crossroads between East and  West,his country attached considerable importance to  issues relating to international migration and development.
Malawi is supportive of the Secretary-General's proposal to  have a consultative forum that would provide an opportunity to  discuss issues relating to international migration and development in a systematic and  comprehensive way.
Countries in the region enhanced their understanding of issues relating to international migration and development through the Asia-Pacific High-level Meeting on International Migration and Development,  held in Bangkok, and  the Policy Dialogue on the Impacts of the Global Financial Crisis on International Migration, .
Also requests the Secretary-General to  initiate appropriate action in consultation with regional commissions in order to  ensure the carrying out of interregional activities,with the contribution of the relevant actors on issues relating to international migration and development, taking into account, inter alia, the report of the Secretary-General, 11 and  encourages the United Nations bodies and  other appropriate international  organizations to  provide support to  such activities;
Pursuant to  General Assembly resolution 56/203 of 21 February 2002, the present report summarizes activities relating to international migration and development that have been carried out by relevant organizations within and  outside the United Nations system, taking into account the lessons learned as well as best practices on migration  management and  policies.
Further requests the Secretary-General to  submit to  the General Assembly at its fifty-eighth session a report on the implementation of the present resolution that will, inter alia, update the lessons learned, as well as best practiceson migration  management and  policies, from the various activities relating to international migration and development that have been carried out at the regionaland  interregional levels, and  submit action-oriented recommendations for the consideration of the Assembly;
