Mr. Roshdy(Egypt) said that it was still not clear to his delegation whether staff members could now sue the United Nations.
Mr. Roshdy(Egypt) said that his delegation disapproved of the United States' ploy at a time when many delegations were absent.
Mr. Roshdy(Egypt) said that the United Nations did not grant any additional entitlements to staff members with more than one wife.
Mr. Roshdy(Egypt), speaking on a point of order, observed that the Chairman had indeed stated earlier that the voting had begun.
Mr. Roshdy(Egypt) said his delegation's reaction to the statement made by the representative of Senegal had been based on the English interpretation.
Mr. Roshdy(Egypt) said he had not replied earlier to the statement by the representative of Israel, in the hope that the Committee would do so through its vote.
Mr. Roshdy(Egypt), speaking on behalf of the original sponsors as well as the Syrian Arab Republic, introduced the amendments contained in document A/C.3/57/L.86.
Mr. Roshdy(Egypt) drew attention to rule 89 of the rules of procedure and requested that the vote on the draft resolution should be carried out in accordance with that rule.
Mr. Roshdy(Egypt) said that his delegation had not wanted to prevent the draft resolution from being adopted by consensus as a mark of its appreciation for the efforts of the main sponsor.
Mr. Roshdy(Egypt): My delegation joined others in the informal consultations leading to the current formulation of draft resolution A/56/L.82.
Mr. Roshdy(Egypt) said that his delegation was not ready to reflect on the proposed amendments and required 24 hours to do so, in accordance with rule 120 of the rules of procedure.
Mr. Roshdy(Egypt), supported by Ms. Ahmed(Sudan), said that the Committee must proceed as indicated by the Chairman, unless a delegation appealed against that ruling.
Mr. Roshdy(Egypt) introduced draft resolution A/C.3/58/L.35 on behalf of its sponsors, who had been joined by Andorra, Armenia, Chili, Japan, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxemburg and Poland.
Mr. Roshdy(Egypt), explaining his delegation's position, said that his delegation had voted in favour of the resolution because it believed in the principle of periodic and genuine elections.
Mr. Roshdy(Egypt), speaking on a point of order, asked for a legal ruling as to whether the Committee was currently engaged in voting, under rule 128 of the rules of procedure.
Mr. Roshdy(Egypt), referring to paragraph 26 of the report of the High Commissioner(A/57/36), asked what had become of the"visiting mission" which was to go to the occupied Palestinian territories.
Mr. Roshdy(Egypt) said that the correction read out by the Secretary of the Committee should be re-submitted to the drafting group; otherwise, the text would read"the Secretariat and other relevant specialized agencies.
Mr. Roshdy(Egypt) thanked Tunisia for the initiative to include an item on an International Year of Sport and Physical Education in the agenda of the fifty-eighth session and hoped that it would have the support of other delegations.
Mr. Roshdy(Egypt) said that he could not understand what was holding up the processing of draft resolution A/C.3/58/L.48, entitled"Preparations for the observance of the tenth anniversary of the International Year of the Family in 2004.
