Synthesis of available information for the preparation of national adaptation programmes of action.
This sectione aim of this review is to provides a synthesis of available information for the following substances: DDT, HCH(lindane), and PCBs.

The LEG concluded that the main issues of concern in the interpretation of the guidelines were already being addressed through the work on ranking and prioritization and on synthesis of available information paragraphs 11- 14 above.

The LEG also acted upon the needs expressed by LDC Parties during the 2003 regional workshops,in particular those needs relating to the two NAPA steps of ranking/prioritization and synthesis of available information on the adverse effects of climate change.
The guidelines also provide for the synthesis of available information on the adverse effects of climate change and on coping strategies, and the conduct of a participatory assessment of vulnerability to current climate variability and extreme weather events;
The LEG agreed to further consider the technical issues related to the communication of information in NAPAs in order toresolve the identified deficiencies related to steps 2(synthesis of available information on impact assessments) and 8(development of projects profiles) in the NAPA annotated guidelines;
The synthesis of available information from national communications of Parties included in Annex I to the Convention(Annex I Parties) and Parties not included in Annex I to the Convention(non-Annex I Parties) related to the adverse effects of climate change;
At its fifth meeting, the group discussed in depth how to respond to the needs expressed by LDC Parties during the 2003 regional workshops,in particular needs relating to the two NAPA steps of ranking and prioritization, and synthesis of available information on the adverse effects of climate change.
To support the NAPA step of synthesis of available information on adverse effects, the LEG will expand the training material developed for the regional workshops, and will disseminate the resulting documentation to the LDCs, as a complement to the above-mentioned training manual for national workshops.
Capacity-building(including hands-on training through targeted national workshops for NAPA technical teams, and dissemination of appropriate tools) should be provided on ranking/prioritization tools and on the"logframe method", vulnerability assessment,project development and synthesis of available information on the adverse effects of climate change.
Technical papers relating to NAPAs, comprising a synthesis of available information for the preparation of NAPAs, papers on synergy among multilateral environmental agreements, regional synergy and elements for implementation strategies, and an overview of preparation, design of implementation strategies and submission of revised project lists and profiles;
It addressed issues around the following: establishing a long-term NAP process at the national level( mandate, framework/ strategy);stocktaking and synthesis of available information on impacts, vulnerability and adaptation; analysis of capacity needs and gaps and possible strategies to address them; data analysis, data management and display of information and visualization in support of the NAP process; and the potential support for the NAP process.
In line with the above-mentioned efforts for supporting the NAPA step on synthesis of available information, the group had also decided at its fifth meeting to develop a training manual to support national workshops on the NAPA step of ranking and prioritisation; and to develop a list of experts on ranking and prioritization, as well as other steps in the NAPA preparation process, in each region for dissemination to the LDCs.
The process for the national adaptation programmes of action consists of the following stages:(a) synthesis of available information;(b) participatory assessment of vulnerability to climate change and extreme weather events;(c) identification of areas of highest risk;(d) identification of key adaptation measures;(e) selection of criteria for the prioritization of activities; and(f) compilation of a short list of prioritized activities.
These included the compilation and synthesis of available scientific information: on the impacts of destructive fishing practices and IUU fishing on marine biodiversity and habitats, while recognizing the role of FAO in this area; on direct human-induced ocean fertilization(see also UNEP/CBD/SBSTTA/13/L.5), while recognizing the role of IMO in this field, and on ocean acidification as well as their impacts on marine biodiversity see also UNEP/CBD/SBSTTA/13/INF/11.
It will make best use of the full range of information and expertise available in the region by creating an effective network and platform for synthesis of information and provision of advice.
In order to ensure that all relevant information, its credibility andreliability, are considered, all stakeholders should be involved in review of the collated baseline information available, and in the synthesis of this information. .
