Recalling that the main objective of  the Action Plan for the Protection of  the Marine Environment and Coastal Areas of  the South-East Pacific, created in 1981 in the framework of  the Convention for the Protection of  the Marine Environment and Coastal Areas of  the South-East Pacific(Lima Convention),is the protection of  the marine environment to promote the preservation of  the health and well-being of present and future generations.
The principal objective of  the Programme is to promotesubregional environmental cooperation and sustainable development efforts for enhancement of  the quality of  life and the well-being of present and future generations in accordance with the spirit of  the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development.
At its first meeting, the Consultative Process emphasized the important role of  marine science and technology in promoting the sustainable management and use of  the oceans and seas as part of  efforts to eradicate poverty, to ensure food security andto sustain economic prosperity and the well-being of present and future generations.
They play a crucial role inproviding global food security, sustaining economic prosperity and ensuring the well-being of present and future generations.
The current unsustainable use of  natural resources on a global scale is endangering not only the state of  the environment, essential ecosystem services and biodiversity, butalso human health and the well-being of present and future generations.
The economic and human costs of  not addressing this problem are enormous andnegatively affect the welfare and well-being of present and future generations.
Since its inception, the Consultative Process has emphasized the importance of  the oceans and seas for providing the vital resources for food security andfor sustaining economic prosperity and the well-being of present and future generations.
Delegations placed in context the importance of  the area of  focus by recalling that marine scientific research and the knowledge resulting from it contributed to the eradication of  poverty, addressed food security issues,sustained economic development and the well-being of present and future generations, and in general, provided for the effective protection of  the marine environment.
In his address, the Special Rapporteur restated that the Aarhus Convention was an excellent tool to advance both environmental protection and the effective enjoyment of  human rights, and urged States Parties to continue their efforts to implement and further develop the Convention as an instrument to enhance public participation andaccountability with a view to strengthening the protection of  the environment and ensuring the well-being of present and future generations.
The peoples of  southern Africa must be given a chance to devote their energies to the creation of  conditions conducive to the well-being of present and future generations.
Recently, the Second United Nations Open-ended Informal Consultative Process on Oceans established by the General Assembly in its resolution 54/33 dealt with the issue of  marine science and marine technology and stressed the important role they play in promoting the sustainable management and uses of  the oceans and seas as part of  efforts to eradicate poverty, to ensure food security andto sustain economic prosperity and the well-being of present and future generations.
The costs of  not addressing the problem are huge, both in economic and human terms, andthey negatively affect the well-being of present and future generations.
More than ever, international cooperation has become an opportunity to create lasting peace, to strengthen protection for the dignity of  human beings everywhere, andto safeguard the rights, profound aspirations and well-being of present and future generations.
Since its inception, the Informal Consultative Process has emphasized the importance of  the oceans and seas for providing vital resources for food security andfor sustaining economic prosperity and the well-being of present and future generations.
