Additionally, the SMM heard five volleys of artillery fire coming from Oktaybr village(35km north-east of Mariupol).
On 3 January, the SMM visited Kominternove(23km north-east of Mariupol) and observed approximately ten armed“DPR” members.
The SMM noted numerous ceasefire violations throughout themorning of 3 March at locations east and north-east of Mariupol.
In Kominternove(23km north-east of Mariupol) the SMM was told by local residents about six 82mm mortar shells having impacted in the village on 19 July.
It faced restrictions to its freedom of movement,most of which were imposed by“DPR” members in areas north-east of Mariupol*.
Residents in“DPR”-controlled Sakhanka(24km north-east of Mariupol) told the SMM that some“DPR” members had moved into uninhabited houses in the village, despite objections from neighbours.
However, it was noted that the jamming was the strongest while theaircraft was flying over government-controlled Hranitne(46km north-east of Mariupol).
At a checkpoint in“DPR”-controlled Oktiabr(29km north-east of Mariupol), a group of 16 civilians(aged 35-40, males and females) said they had been waiting for six hours.
The separatists did not allow observers to travel in a westerly direction to the village Pikuz andSouth to the settlement of Sakhank in the North-East of Mariupol.
On 3 July, while speaking with residents in“DPR”-controlled Kominternove(23km north-east of Mariupol), an armed man approached the SMM and told the patrol to end the conversation and leave the area immediately.
At approximately 14:00hrs an SMM unmanned aerial vehicle(UAV)was in an area three kilometres South-East of Pavlopil(25km North-East of Mariupol), an area of on-going fighting.
Specifically on both sides of the contact line in the area north-east of Mariupol- in government-controlled area eight tanks(unknown type), and in“DPR”-controlled area ten tanks(unknown type).
Whilst areas at and around Donetsk airport remained largely calm, the SMM continued to note ceasefire violations elsewhere,in particular in areas north-east of Mariupol, and around Horlivka.
The SMM again attempted to reach Kominternove(23km north-east of Mariupol, 88km south of Donetsk), from both sides of the contact line, to follow up on reports about the presence of armed“DPR” members in the village.
The SMM continued to monitor the security and humanitarian situation in Kominternove(“DPR”-controlled,23km north-east of Mariupol, 92km south of Donetsk) and surrounding areas.
Further, residents of Vodiane(government-controlled, 19km north-east of Mariupol) told the SMM they continue to hear shelling around Shyrokyne as well as in the direction of government-controlled Chermalyk and Hranitne(31km and 46km north-east of Mariupol, respectively).
The UAV also recorded beyond the respective withdrawal lines six MBTs, 26 armoured personnel carriers(APCs), andat least 15 military trucks in the area of“DPR”-controlled Komsomolske(74km north-east of Mariupol).
On 25 December,at a“DPR”-controlled checkpoint 5.7km north-east of Kominternove(23km north-east of Mariupol) armed men made the SMM wait for 25 minutes at the side of the road.
In addition, an SMM Unmanned Aerial Vehicle(UAV)- despite being jammed for 10 minutes around a“DPR”-controlled village- spotted four tanks in“DPR”-controlled territory and one tank in government-controlled territory,all in or around villages close to the contact line, north-east of Mariupol.
The following day, in“DPR”-controlled areas,the UAV spotted a self-propelled howitzer near Petrivske(77km north-east of Mariupol), a concentration of eight MBTs, 24 APCs in Komsomolske, and ten MBTs near Sontseve.
The SMM visited for the first time the“DPR”-controlled villages of Dzerzhynske(25km east of Mariupol), Leninske(22km east of Mariupol), Oktyabr(26km north-east of Mariupol) and Zaichenko(24km north-east of Mariupol)*.
Inhabitants(seven women, one man) in the government-controlled villages of Pyshchevyk(25km north-east of Mariupol) and Pavlopil(27km north-east of Mariupol) told the SMM of their urgent need for food, drinking water and public transport.
In emergency situations, he said, the Ukrainian Armed Forces were in charge of providing first aid and bringing patients to the villages of Vinohradne, Talakivka or Sartana(11km east,17km north-east and 14km north-east of Mariupol, respectively), from where the emergency office could transport them to the hospital in Mariupol. .
An armed“DPR” member at acheckpoint at the western entrance of“DPR”-controlled Kominternove(23km north-east of Mariupol), told the SMM that it was not allowed to deviate from the main road and/or stop in the village or speak to residents.
A“DPR”“border guard” told the SMM that due to unspecified“DPR” militarytraining at the border crossing point in Ulyanivske(80km north-east of Mariupol) north of Novoazovsk, civilian vehicles were redirected to the border crossing point in Novoazovsk.
In three separate locations in thesouthern part of Donetsk region,“DPR”-controlled Telmanove(50km north-east of Mariupol), government-controlled Volnovakha(55km north of Mariupol) and“DPR”-controlled Novooleksandrivka(63km north-east of Mariupol), the SMM heard several undetermined explosions.
The SMM also heard a total of 40 undetermined explosions- 25of them caused by artillery fire- in government-controlled areas north and north-east of Mariupol, including Berdianske, Starohnativka and Hranitne(18km east, 53km north-east and 47km north-east of Mariupol, respectively).
