На основі відкриття давніх прибережних апвелінгових систем у північній окраїні океану Тетіс(Ю. Сеньковський, 1971) та узагальнення даних щодо природи седиментогенезу в сучасних апвелінгових областях Світового океану, використавши результати формаційного вивчення осадовихнашарувань Карпато-Чорноморського сегмента океану Тетіс, науковцями відділу вперше в літології був описаний новий генетичний тип осадових нашарувань, збагачених певними комплексами біогенів, під назвою“апвелінгові формації”.Наукові працівники кафедри видали 16 монографій, отримали більше 100 авторських свідоцтв на винаходи, виконали велику кількість науково-технічних проектів.Результатом великої науково-дослідної і науково-освітньої діяльності колективу науковців Відділу є видання друком щедро ілюстрованого довідника у двох томах„Громадські музеї Львівщини“(Львів: Проман, 2007.- Т. І.- 243 с. :іл.; Т.
