Mr. TARYAM(United Arab Emirates)(interpretation from Arabic): At the outset, I should like to pay tribute to the tireless efforts and the constructive contributions of the Commission on Narcotic Drugs, the International Narcotics Control Board and the United Nations International Drug Control Programme. I would like to reaffirm our commitment to carrying out the functions and tasks contained in the Global Programme of Action on international cooperation against drugs,in the context of the United Nations Decade against Drug Abuse.
She pointed out that the strategic action planwas intended to further develop the guidance contained in the Global Programme of Action and to support regional seas and other bodies in their efforts to address sewage as a priority problem, by seeking consensus on the guidance document on best practices and procedures; promoting" alternative" solutions; facilitating partnerships to apply best practices and facilitating regional cooperation to replicate best practices.

Several of the provisions contained in paragraphs 74 to 85 of the Global Programme of Action have been incorporated into the ongoing work programme of UNDCP.
Ms. Vandeweerd provided a presentation of progress that had been achieved in implementing the Global Programme of Action during the period 2002- 2006, summarizing the information contained in document UNEP/GPA/IGR.2/2.
