Georgia is a party to the Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movement of Hazardous Wastes and their Disposal.
Statements were also made by representatives of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization(UNIDO), the World Health Organization(WHO) andthe secretariat of the Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movement of Hazardous Wastes and their Disposal.
The Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movement of Hazardous Wastes and Their Disposal entered into force for Switzerland in 1992.

The 1989 Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movement of Hazardous Wastes and their Disposal came into force in May 1992 and now has 163 Parties.
It was noted in that regard that the mercury in waste partnership area had been working with the secretariat of the Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movement of Hazardous Wastes and their Disposal.
The following convention secretariats attended the session:Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movement of Hazardous Wastes and their Disposal, United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification in Those Countries Experiencing Serious Drought and/or Desertification, particularly in Africa, United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, Convention on Biological Diversity.
As part of its core operations, the secretariat works closely with the secretariats of other relevant international bodies, in particular the secretariats of the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants andthe Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movement of Hazardous Wastes and their Disposal.
At the same meeting, the representative of the Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movement of Hazardous Wastes and their Disposal made an intervention.
Welcomes the decisions of the conferences of the parties to the Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movement of Hazardous Wastes and Their Disposal, the Rotterdam Convention on the Prior Informed Consent Procedure for Certain Hazardous Chemicals and Pesticides in International Trade and the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants at their second simultaneous extraordinary meetings conveying a readiness to cooperate and coordinate with the Minamata Convention on Mercury;
This manual has been produced in accordance with decisions VIII/24 andIX/23 of the Conference of the Parties to the Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movement of Hazardous Wastes and Their Disposal, based on an outline prepared by the Secretariat of the Convention.
The following United Nations bodies and specialized agencies were represented:Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movement of Hazardous Wastes and their Disposal, Rotterdam Convention on the Prior Informed Consent Procedure for Certain Hazardous Chemicals and Pesticides in International Trade and Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants, United Nations Institute for Training and Research.
Current technical guidelines for environmentally sound co-processing of hazardous waste as alternative fuels and raw materials for use in cement kilns conformto decisions VIII/17 and IX/17 of the Conference of the Parties to the Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movement of Hazardous Wastes and Their Disposal and decision OEWG-VII/9 of the Open-ended Working Group of the Basel Convention.
In addition, UNEP performs secretariat functions for multilateral environmental agreements such as the Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movement of Hazardous Wastes and their Disposal, the Rotterdam Convention on the Prior Informed Consent Procedure for Certain Hazardous Chemicals and Pesticides in International Trade, the Stockholm Convention and the Montreal Protocol of the Vienna Convention on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer.
These include the following: Agenda 21 and the Rio Declaration on Environment and Development, adopted by the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in 1992; the World Charter for Nature(General Assembly resolution 37/7 of 28 October 1982);the Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movement of Hazardous Wastes and Their Disposal of 1989; the Convention on Environmental Impact Assessment in a Transboundary Context of 1991; and the Convention on the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes of 1992.
Related processes include the 1992 United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change,the Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movement of Hazardous Wastes and their Disposal, the advanced stage of negotiations reached in the draft international convention to combat desertification in those countries experiencing serious droughts and/or desertification, particularly in Africa, which is expected to be agreed to by June 1994.
Recalling further the existing international framework on the movement of toxic and hazardous substances and wastes, in particular the Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movement of Hazardous Wastes and Their Disposal, including its Ban Amendment adopted in 1995, and the regional instruments and arrangements in this regard.
Further notes the decision taken at the eighth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movement of Hazardous Wastes and their Disposal, aimed at reinforcing cooperation with the International Maritime Organization on regulations on the prevention of pollution from ships;
And the Rio Declaration on Environment and Development, 7 Ibid., annex I. adopted by the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in 1992; the World Charter for Nature(General Assembly resolution 37/7, annex);the Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movement of Hazardous Wastes and Their Disposal of 1989; the Convention on Environmental Impact Assessment in a Transboundary Context of 1991; and the Convention on the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes of 1992.

When applying destruction as the method of disposal, it is of utmost importance to comply with the Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movement of Hazardous Wastes and their Disposal and dispose of assets containing hazardous waste in the most environmentally friendly manner.
It was felt that further clarification and revision of paragraph 16 would be useful, in the light of the fact that, in non-annex VII countries,the lack of domestic legislation on the control of transboundary movement of hazardous wastes or regulation on environmentally sound management requirements should not be seen as a legal obstacle to ratifying the Ban Amendment as decision III/1 contains an export ban.
