Recognizing the contribution of indigenous andlocal communities embodying traditional lifestyles, and women within those communities, to the conservation and sustainable use of biological resources.
It is stated in article 8(j), inter alia, that States shall, as far as possible and as appropriate, respect, preserve and maintain knowledge, innovations andpractices of indigenous communities embodying traditional lifestyles relevant for the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity.
To respect, preserve and maintain knowledge, innovations and practices of indigenous andlocal communities embodying traditional lifestyles, and encourage the equitable sharing of the benefits arising from traditional knowledge so that those communities are adequately protected and rewarded, consistent with the provisions of the Convention on Biological Diversity and in accordance with the decisions of the Conference of the Parties;
Application and development of legal and other forms of protection for the knowledge, innovations and practices of indigenous andlocal communities embodying traditional lifestyles relevant to the conservation and sustainable use of forest biological diversity;
Respect, preserve and maintain knowledge, innovations and practices of indigenous andlocal communities embodying traditional lifestyles relevant for the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity and promote their wider application with the approval and involvement of the holders of such knowledge, innovations and practices and encourage the equitable sharing of the benefits arising from the utilization of such knowledge, innovations and practices.
Request the Executive Secretary to gather and compile a series of best-practice casestudies on the involvement of indigenous andlocal communities embodying traditional lifestyles in sustainable-tourism and ecotourism activities and projects.
Subject to national legislation, respect, preserve and maintain knowledge, innovations and practices of indigenous andlocal communities embodying traditional lifestyles relevant for the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity and promote their wider application with the approval and involvement of the holders of such knowledge, innovations and practices and encourage the equitable sharing of the benefits arising from the utilization of such knowledge, innovations and practices.

Reaffirming also the need, subject to national legislation, to respect, preserve and maintain the knowledge, innovations and practices of indigenous andlocal communities embodying traditional lifestyles relevant for the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity, to promote their wider application with the approval and involvement of the holders of such knowledge, innovations and practices and to encourage the equitable sharing of the benefits arising from the utilization of such knowledge, innovations and practices.
Thus, the Convention on Biological Diversity, adopted in 1992, stipulates, in its article 8, that regulatory provisions relating to the knowledge, innovations andpractices of indigenous communities embodying traditional lifestyles are of importance for the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity.
Note that integrating knowledge, innovations and practices of indigenous andlocal communities embodying traditional lifestyles within modern management practices was a focus of the CBD even before its first Intergovernmental Committee.
In particular, article 8(j) and related provisions directly address matters of the utmost importance to indigenous and local communities by focusing on the respect, preservation and maintenance of the knowledge, innovations and practices of indigenous andlocal communities, embodying traditional lifestyles relevant for the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity.
To reaffirm our commitment, subject to national legislation, to respect, preserve and maintain the knowledge, innovations and practices of indigenous andlocal communities embodying traditional lifestyles relevant to the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity, promote their wider application with the approval and involvement of the holders of such knowledge, innovations and practices and encourage the equitable sharing of the benefits arising from their utilization;
In addition, article 8(j) of the Convention on Biological Diversity requires its Contracting Parties to"respect, preserve and maintain knowledge, innovations and practices of indigenous andlocal communities embodying traditional lifestyles relevant for the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity.
Reaffirms the commitment, subject to national legislation, to respect, preserve and maintain the knowledge, innovations and practices of indigenous andlocal communities embodying traditional lifestyles relevant to the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity, promote their wider application with the approval and involvement of the holders of such knowledge, innovations and practices and encourage the equitable sharing of the benefits arising from their utilization;
Also welcomes the decision of the Conference of the Parties regarding its programme of work for forest biological diversity, and encourages the parties to cooperate with the United Nations Forum on Forests, in particular with regard to respecting, preserving and maintaining the knowledge, innovations and practices of indigenous andlocal communities embodying traditional lifestyles, in accordance with article 8(j) and related provisions of the Convention;
To provide advice to the Conference of the Parties on measures to strengthen cooperation at the international level among indigenous andlocal communities embodying traditional lifestyles relevant to the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity and make proposals on the strengthening of mechanisms that support such cooperation.
In its decision IV/9, the Conference of the Parties established an ad hoc open-ended inter-sessional working group on the implementation of article 8(j) and related provisions to, inter alia, provide advice as a priority on the application and development of legal and other appropriate forms of protection for the knowledge, innovations and practices of indigenous andlocal communities embodying traditional lifestyles relevant for the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity.
Article 8(j) addresses the knowledge, innovations and practices of indigenous andlocal communities embodying traditional lifestyles relevant for the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity.
Welcomes the decision of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity regarding its programme of work for forest biological diversity, and encourages the parties to and the secretariat of the Convention to cooperate with the United Nations Forum on Forests, inter alia, with regard to respecting, preserving and maintaining the knowledge, innovations and practices of indigenous andlocal communities embodying traditional lifestyles, in accordance with article 8(j) and related provisions of the Convention;
Under article 8(j) of the Convention on Biological Diversity, States shall"respect, preserve and maintain knowledge, innovations and practices of indigenous andlocal communities embodying traditional lifestyles relevant for the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity and promote their wider application with the approval and involvement of the holders of such knowledge, innovations and practices and encourage the equitable sharing of the benefits arising from the utilization of such knowledge, innovations and practices.
Provide advice on the application and development of legal and other appropriate forms of protection for the knowledge, innovations and practices of indigenous andlocal communities embodying traditional lifestyles relevant for the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity;
Each Contracting Party shall, as far as possible and as appropriate…[S]ubject to its national legislation, respect, preserve and maintain knowledge, innovations and practices of indigenous andlocal communities embodying traditional lifestyles relevant for the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity and promote their wider application with the approval and involvement of the holders of such knowledge, innovations and practices and encourage the equitable sharing of the benefits arising from the utilization of such knowledge, innovations and practices;
Helping to identify relevant principles, guidelines and mechanisms for countries to develop their own appropriate and effective sui generis system(s), such as traditional resource rights, in order to implement article 8(j)(requiring that States"respect, preserve and maintain knowledge, innovations and practices of indigenous andlocal communities embodying traditional lifestyles", while encouraging the"equitable sharing of the benefits arising from the utilization of such knowledge, innovations and practices");
Calls upon parties and all stakeholders to incorporate, within their national strategies and action plans, measures to respect, preserve and maintain knowledge, innovations and practices of indigenous andlocal communities embodying traditional lifestyles relevant for the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity and promote their wider application with the approval and involvement of the holders of such knowledge, innovations and practices and encourage the equitable sharing of the benefits arising from the utilization of such knowledge, innovations and practices;
Contracting parties to the Convention are requested in article 8(j) to respect, preserve and maintain knowledge, innovations and practices of indigenous andlocal communities embodying traditional lifestyles relevant for the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity.
In its article 8(j), the Convention stipulates that each contracting party should,"subject to its national legislation, respect, preserve and maintain knowledge, innovations and practices of indigenous andlocal communities embodying traditional lifestyles relevant for the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity and promote their wider application with the approval and involvement of the holders of such knowledge, innovations and practices and encourage the equitable sharing of the benefits arising from the utilization of such knowledge, innovations and practices.
Furthermore, in its decision IV/9, the Conference of the Parties invited the World Intellectual Property Organization(WIPO) to take into account in its work the lifestyles and the traditional systems of access to and use of the knowledge, technologies and practices of indigenous andlocal communities embodying traditional lifestyles relevant to the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity, and the relevant recommendations of the Conference of the Parties.
Article 8(j) of the Convention stipulates that each Contracting Party shall, subject to its national legislation, respect, preserve and maintain knowledge, innovations and practices of indigenous andlocal communities embodying traditional lifestyles relevant for the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity and promote their wider application with the approval and involvement of the holders of such knowledge, innovations and practices and encourage the equitable sharing of the benefits arising from the utilization of such knowledge, innovations and practices.
Subject to its national legislation, respect, preserve and maintain knowledge, innovations and practices of indigenous andlocal communities embodying traditional lifestyles relevant for the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity;
