However, a sharp contrast between the two categories is observed in thedegree of export instability: the magnitude of fluctuations in merchandise export values increased by 24% in IDCs from the 1970s decade to the 1980s decade, while it diminished by 14% in non-IDCs.

Despite the apparent expansion of trade in value terms, the effect of the crisis appears tobe continuing to affect many regions in volume terms(figure III). In aggregate, world merchandise export volumes regained their pre-crisis levels by the end of 2010 and surpassed that level by around 6 per cent in 2012, with the fastest recovery registered by developing Asia.
All in all, merchandise export earnings declined in a majority of the countries, while an even larger number witnessed a decrease in imports.
